MLB Game Summary - Oakland at San Francisco

(Wednesday, July 9)

Final Score: San Francisco 5, Oakland 2

San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Cain pitched six innings to secure his first win in nearly two months and Hunter Pence homered and drove in two runs in San Francisco's 5-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

The Giants had been outscored by the A's 11-1 in the first two meetings this week at the Coliseum, but on Wednesday the scene shifted and the trend at AT&T Park continued. The Giants snapped Oakland's six-game winning streak and won at home against the A's for the 13th time in the last 15 such encounters.

Cain (2-7) gave up five hits and a pair of runs with two walks and four strikeouts. The righty had been 0-4 over his previous seven starts and won for the first time since May 15 against Miami.

"It's all from the good work that happened earlier and we have to get back on track," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said about his team moving back into the first place in the NL West, a percentage point ahead of the Dodgers. "We finally got some runs on the board. There's a long road ahead of us, but we are fighting. This was a good one to get at home and play well."

Jason Hammel (0-1) surrendered six hits and three runs -- two earned -- with three walks and a trio of strikeouts over five frames in his A's debut. He was acquired last weekend in a deal along with Jeff Samardzija from the Chicago Cubs for top prospect Addison Russell, former first-round pick Billy McKinney, right-handed hurler Dan Straily and a player to be named later or cash.

"My slider is usually my go-to pitch, but I just wasn't commanding it tonight," Hammel said.

Stephen Vogt homered for the A's, who had given up just five runs during their winning streak. They fell to 9-2 in interleague play this season.

The Giants had been shut out four times over their previous nine games, but took a 3-1 lead through four innings Wednesday. Gregor Blanco walked with one out in the second and scored when Joe Panik singled to left. The ball was bobbled by Yoenis Cespedes on the transfer to his throwing hand and got away, allowing the Giants the 1-0 lead.

Buster Posey singled in Brandon Belt in the third before Vogt went deep to right, out of AT&T Park, in the fourth.

Pence homered to center in the bottom of the frame, and Cain worked out of trouble in the fifth. With men on second and third, Coco Crisp grounded out to first to conclude the inning.

Jed Lowrie singled in Cespedes in the sixth, but Pence's base hit in the bottom portion plated Panik. Brandon Crawford scored on Eric O'Flaherty's wild pitch later in the inning.

The A's didn't have a base runner after Lowrie's single in the sixth as Jeremy Affeldt, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla each threw a spotless inning. Casilla notched his fourth save.

Game Notes

Cespedes went 0-for-4 and is 3-for-31 this month after batting .324 in June. He had a 16-game road hitting streak broken ... A's pitchers are 0-for-17 this year and are hitless in their last 27 at-bats dating back to June 3, 2013.
