Description: Toronto right-hander Sergio Santos has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Santos has been dealing with soreness in his right forearm. The injury might explain Santos' sub-par start to the season (0-2, 9.00 ERA, three blown saves in 14 appearances).

Cold5/3/2014 5:14:00 PM
Description: Sergio Santos has been ousted as the Blue Jays' closer. SOURCE: Barry Davis, Sportnet
Insight: Santos has blown three of his last four save chances, allowing seven hits, six walks and nine earned runs over his past six outings (20.25 ERA). Aaron Loup (1-1, 3.38 ERA) will handle the ninth inning until Casey Janssen (strained oblique) returns from the disabled list.

4/5/2014 7:49:00 PM
Description: Blue Jays interim closer Sergio Santos picked up a four-out save Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: Santos got the last out of the eighth in a 1-0 game and Toronto put three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning, making it a pretty easy ninth for Santos, though he still managed to make things interesting by allowing a hit and walking a batter. The 30-year-old has gone 2-for-2 in save chances this season but put six men on base in two innings and was pulled from one save chance after walking the only batter he faced. Casey Janssen (back) will probably get the job back when he returns from the DL later this month.

3/30/2014 5:47:00 PM
Description: Sergio Santos will close games for the Blue Jays while Casey Janssen recovers from a lower-back strain, according to Shi Davidi of sportsnet.ca.
Insight: Santos entered the 2012 season as Toronto's closer after recording a 3.55 ERA, 30 saves and 92 Ks in 63 1/3 innings with the White Sox in 2012. However, he threw just 30 2/3 innings the last two years while Janssen has put up a 2.55 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, 56 saves and 117 Ks in 116 1/3 innings during that span. Santos should be added in all leagues because he's talented enough to reclaim the job full-time.

8/1/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Toronto righthander Sergio Santos has been activated from the 60-day DL.
Insight: Elbow issues have sidelined Santos since April. He's not expected to have any fantasy value aside from leagues that use holds as a rotisserie category.

5/14/2013 4:43:00 PM
Description: Blue Jays reliever Sergio Santos will have surgery to remove bone chips and spurs from his right elbow, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca.
Insight: Santos hasn't pitched since April 2012 due to shoulder and elbow issues. He was nearing a rehab assignment from his most recent injury, but he needs another procedure and will be out indefinitely. This won't end his season, according to Davidi.

7/24/2012 8:51:00 PM
Description: Toronto reliever Sergio Santos underwent season-ending shoulder surgery Tuesday, according to the Blue Jays official website.
Insight: Santos went on the DL in April with shoulder inflammation, but he was only projected to be out for a few weeks. Weeks turned to months and now Santos is out for the year. Casey Janssen will continue to handle closing duties in Toronto.

6/7/2012 9:29:00 PM
Description: According to the Blue Jays' official website, Toronto closer Sergio Santos is easing his way back from shoulder inflammation. Santos threw off a mound Wednesday for the third time since suffering the injury in late April.
Insight: Toronto will determine whether Santos pitches to live batters or throws another bullpen session next time, Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. The right-hander has thrown 25-30 pitches with increasing intensity each time out, though he's yet to resume throwing his slider.

5/4/2012 5:24:00 PM
Description: Sergio Santos (shoulder) hopes to be back with Toronto in the next 2-3 weeks, the Blue Jays' official website reports.
Insight: Santos will start playing catch on Tuesday. There is still no timetable for his return, but he should reclaim the closer role when he returns. Francisco Cordero has given up a run in each of his last three appearances, blowing two saves.

4/25/2012 5:22:00 PM
Description: Sergio Santos is out for at least four weeks.
Insight: Santos has inflammation in his shoulder and will not throw for two weeks. Francisco Cordero is a must-own, as he will be the undisputed closer in Toronto's bullpen until Santos returns.

4/24/2012 4:27:00 PM
Description: Even though the MRI on Sergio Santos' injured throwing shoulder showed no structural damage, he will not throw for 10-14 days.
Insight: Santos will likely be cleared to throw once the shoulder inflammation subsides in two weeks. Pick up Francisco Cordero if he's available.

4/22/2012 12:29:00 PM
Description: Sergio Santos has been placed on the disabled list after feeling tightness in his shoulder while pitching Friday against the Royals.
Insight: Francisco Cordero (327 career saves) seems like the logical replacement for Santos, who has struggled this season (just two for four in save opportunities).

4/13/2012 12:22:00 PM
Description: Blue Jays closer Sergio Santos will miss Friday and likely Saturday's game with Baltimore due to the birth of a child.
Insight: Save situations will likely go to Francisco Cordero in the interim.

4/11/2012 5:24:00 PM
Description: Sergio Santos picked up his first save of the season on Wednesday vs. Boston.
Insight: Santos took over for Ricky Romero with one out in the ninth, tossing 2/3 of an inning with one strikeout. Santos has to continue to perform like this if he wants to hold off Francisco Cordero for the Jays' closer job.

4/9/2012 10:43:00 PM
Description: Sergio Santos had a terrible outing Monday night against the Red Sox. Toronto's closer entered the game with a 2-1 lead and left with the Blue Jays trailing 4-2. Santos, who picked up the loss Monday, is now 0-2 in save chances this season.
Insight: Santos' control was non-existent Monday night, walking three batters and throwing a wild pitch (and it would have been two but one was generously called a passed ball instead). We're not sure what to make of Santos' rough start but tread carefully: the Toronto righthander now has a 15.43 ERA for the season.

4/7/2012 4:27:00 PM
Description: Sergio Santos blew a save on Saturday, giving up a solo homer to Asdrubal Cabrera in the ninth inning.
Insight: It's been an inauspicious start for Santos with Toronto. On Thursday, he closed out a 7-4 win over the Indians but did not get the save because he only threw 2/3 of an inning, and now he blows his second opportunity. Still, the Jays will give Santos every opportunity to succeed, and he has the stuff to do so.

4/5/2012 8:29:00 PM
Description: Sergio Santos closed out the Blue Jays' 7-4 victory over the Indians, but he didn't receive a save.
Insight: Manager John Farrell left Luis Perez in for one batter in the 16th, as it appeared Santos wasn't ready. Santos ended up throwing 2/3 of an inning in a three-run game, which is not considered a save under the MLB rules and regulations. Tough break for those who own Santos, as he would've had an easy save opportunity if he came in one batter sooner.
