MLB Game Summary - NY Mets at NY Yankees

(Thursday, May 30th)

Final Score: NY Mets 3, NY Yankees 1

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Dillon Gee extended the New York Mets' longest winning streak of the season with easily his best start of the year, with the effort leading the way in a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees that completed a four-game sweep of the home-and-home Subway Series between the city rivals.

Entering the contest with a 6.34 earned run average and a brutal 9.97 ERA on the road, Gee (3-6) dominated a struggling Yankees lineup over 7 1/3 brilliant innings in which he permitted just one run on four hits and struck out a career-best 12 without a walk.

"He was doing a great job on both sides of the plate. He was working it up and down. It was about as complete as Dillon has pitched all year," said Mets manager Terry Collins.

The right-hander concluded his outing by retiring 15 consecutive batters -- the last five via strikeout -- after surrendering Robinson Cano's solo homer in the bottom of the third inning.

Marlon Byrd supplied the offense in the Mets' fifth straight triumph with a two-run homer off Vidal Nuno (1-2) in the top of the second, the only blemish of the young lefty's night.

The win also gave the Mets their first-ever season sweep of the Yankees since interleague play was instituted in 1997.

Cano had two of the Yankees' four hits in the team's latest setback, the Bronx Bombers' fifth in a row. The Yankees have mustered only 10 runs during the skid.

"His change up was really good tonight. He was ahead of our hitters all night and mixed in a few curveballs to get some backdoor strikeouts on our lefties," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi.

Gee yielded just two more hits after giving up consecutive singles to Brett Gardner and Cano to begin the Yankees' half of the first inning, then received some support from the Mets' offense in the second.

Lucas Duda drew a leadoff walk before Byrd crushed Nuno's 1-2 pitch well into the second deck in left field for his second homer in as many days, with the blast staking the Mets to a 2-0 lead.

Cano cut the deficit in half with a line-drive shot into the right-field seats in the bottom of the third in what turned out to be the Yankees' last baserunner of the evening, as Gee combined with relievers Scott Rice and Bobby Parnell to record 20 consecutive outs to close things out.

Nuno was sharp as well during the middle innings, with the rookie finishing his six-inning stint by setting down nine straight batters and not giving up a hit after the second. He permitted only three hits with a pair of walks overall, while throwing 62 of his 97 pitches for strikes.

The Mets closed out the scoring by tacking on a run in the eighth. Omar Quintanilla worked a walk against Shawn Kelley and advanced to third on a groundout and a wild pitch in front of John Buck's slow roller that stayed fair before striking the third-base bag.

Game Notes

Gee had struck out nine in a game twice previously, most recently against Baltimore on June 20 of last season ... The Mets last won five in a row from May 5-9, 2012 ... The Yankees have put up only three runs total in Nuno's three starts this season ... Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada was placed on the 15- day disabled list prior to the game after straining his right quadriceps in Wednesday's matchup, with Quintanilla called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill in ... The Mets also announced pitcher Jon Niese will not make his scheduled start Saturday in Miami due to left shoulder tendinitis, with Collin McHugh set to take his place.
