American League Game Summary - LA Angels of Anaheim at Seattle

(Sunday, April 28th)

Final Score: Seattle 2, LA Angels of Anaheim 1

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Michael Morse crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a tie game and lifting the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Safeco Field.

Jason Bay also homered for Seattle, which took three of four from the Angels to win its first series of the season.

"We wanted to win this series bad," Morse said. "We've been fighting and it was a tough game, a pitcher's game. We're going to have a lot of these one-run games, and to come out on top like that means a lot for the character of this team."

Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma tossed another gem, but earned a no-decision after allowing just one unearned run while fanning eight in six innings. Carter Capps (2-1) threw two scoreless innings in relief for the win, while Tom Wilhelmsen pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in as many tries.

Angels starter Jason Vargas (0-3) went the distance but remained winless on the season. The former Mariner struck out seven and yielded just two runs and six hits in eight innings of work.

"I thought Vargas pitched a great game," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of his starter. "Just a couple mistakes there late and Bay and Morse didn't miss them and that ended up being the ballgame, but he pitched a great game."

Following five scoreless frames, the Angels finally broke through with a run in the top of the sixth off Iwakuma, who had allowed just two baserunners to that point. Andrew Romine led off with a single to right and advanced to second on Peter Bourjos' sacrifice bunt. Mariners shortstop Robert Andino then allowed a Mike Trout grounder to go under his glove and into left field. Romine scored on the error, Andino's second of the season.

Iwakuma then struck out Albert Pujols looking and retired Josh Hamilton on a weak grounder to second base to prevent any further damage.

Bay slapped his second home run of the season with one away in the seventh inning, a solo shot that knotted the score.

Morse came to the plate with one out and no one on in the eighth and took a 1-2 offering to left field for his seventh homer of the campaign, and first since April 9.

Game Notes

Bourjos went 2-for-3 with a double ... Morse was the lone Mariner with two hits ... Mariners pitchers did not surrender a walk ... The game was completed in just 2 hours and 31 minutes.
