American League Preview from The Sports Network

Sunday, May 19th (All times Eastern)

Chicago White Sox (19-22) at LA Angels of Anaheim (16-27), 3:35 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Jake Peavy (5-1, 2.96) LA Angels - Jason Vargas (2-3, 4.03)

(Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim try to salvage a four- game split with the Chicago White Sox on Sunday following their offensive outburst in the third game of the series.

Alberto Callaspo hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs to pace the Angels in their 12-9 win on Saturday. Mark Trumbo went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, two RBI and three runs scored, while Albert Pujols added two hits and scored two runs for the Angels, who snapped a three-game slide.

Anaheim's offense had only one game with six or more runs over its last seven before its breakthrough on Saturday.

"It's great to help out the team and this was a good win," said Trumbo. "The whole team had a lot of focused at-bats today."

Although Joe Blanton lasted just 4 1/3 innings in the start for Anaheim, giving up four runs on 11 hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts, Robert Coello pitched 1 2/3 flawless frames to pick up the win.

Jason Vargas takes the hill for the hosts on Sunday hoping to get his ERA under four. Vargas is 2-3 with a 4.03 ERA through eight starts, but he is 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA in his last four outings. The left-hander gave up only two runs in seven-plus innings, snapping opponent Jeremy Guthrie's 18-game unbeaten streak in the Angels' 6-2 win over the Royals on Tuesday.

Chicago will counter with Jake Peavy, who enters with a 5-1 record to go along with a 2.96 ERA. Peavy was impressive on Tuesday, holding the Twins to two runs on five hits during his seven innings of work. Peavy has picked up a win in each of his last three starts and has lowered his ERA from 5.56 over his past five outings.

The White Sox may be without first baseman Adam Dunn, who left Saturday's game in the fifth inning with back spasms. Dunn, who is listed as day-to-day, drove in two runs before leaving.

Chicago set a season-high with 17 hits in the setback but also left 12 men stranded.

"Early on in the game, first inning especially, we had the opportunities to get on the board," said Dunn. "Looking back, that's obviously what cost us."

Alex Rios extended his hitting streak to 13 games and he is 20-for-53 during the run. Hector Gimenez was 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and two runs scored for the White Sox, but starter Hector Santiago gave up three runs on four hits with four walks over 3 1/3 innings. Chicago's allowance of 12 runs to the Angels set a season-high for the club as it had its four-game winning streak end.

The White Sox lost two of three to the Angels in a Windy City series earlier his season and have dropped 10 of the past 16 meetings between the teams.
