National League Game Summary - San Diego at Milwaukee

(Monday, July 22nd)

Final Score: San Diego 5, Milwaukee 3

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Jesus Guzman went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI and Carlos Quentin drove in two runs to carry the San Diego Padres over Milwaukee, 5-3, on a day the Brewers found out they would play the remainder of the season without 2011 National League MVP Ryan Braun.

Major League Baseball suspended Braun for violations of the Basic Agreement and its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. He waived the appeal and his suspension began Monday night.

He is also banned from any potential postseason games, but the Brewers (41-57) aren't headed in that direction.

The Padres rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to win for just the second time in their last 14 games on the road. They also snapped Milwaukee's four-game winning streak.

Andrew Cashner (6-5) gave up three runs over six innings to pick up his first win since June 11 against the Braves. Huston Street threw a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his 17th save to open this four-game series.

Jean Segura had two RBI and Jonathan Lucroy drove in the other run for the Brewers, who saw Tom Gorzelanny (1-4) surrender all five runs over 5 2/3 innings.

The focus, though, was off the field for the night with Braun's suspension. He and other MLB players, including Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, have been linked to the Biogenesis of America clinic that allegedly provided performance-enhancing drugs to the players.

"As far as myself, the coaching staff and the players, we were personally disappointed about the news we received of the suspension of Ryan Braun," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "With the suspension, obviously affects us the rest of the year in what we do and where we're trying to go. As far as the investigation and suspension, I know everybody thinks we knew what was going on, but we didn't."

Braun provided a statement prior to the game.

"As I have acknowledged in the past, I am not perfect," Braun said. "I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences of those actions. This situation has taken a toll on me and my entire family, and it is has been a distraction to my teammates and the Brewers organization.

"I am very grateful for the support I have received from players, ownership and the fans in Milwaukee and around the country. Finally, I wish to apologize to anyone I may have disappointed -- all of the baseball fans especially those in Milwaukee, the great Brewers organization, and my teammates. I am glad to have this matter behind me once and for all, and I cannot wait to get back to the game I love."

Milwaukee scored two runs in the first. After Logan Schafer walked with one out, Segura and Lucroy delivered back-to-back RBI doubles.

Guzman responded with a two-out solo shot in the second to bring the Padres within one.

In the fifth, Norichika Aoki hit a leadoff single, stole second, and scored on a Segura grounder, giving the Brewers a 3-1 advantage.

However, the Padres drove in four runs in the sixth. Cashner and Everth Cabrera bunted back-to-back singles to start the inning and Chase Headley drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Quentin drove in two runs with a double to right-center. Guzman followed suit two batters later with a shot to left.

"We went to the small ground attack started by Cash," Padres manager Bud Black said. "That was a great bunt and the unique slide into first base. The two doubles were huge hits."

Game Notes

The Brewers set a franchise record with 36 straight scoreless innings pitched, breaking the previous record of 31 set on April 18-22, 1990 ... Entering this game, Gorzelanny made exactly 114 starts and 114 relief appearances during his major-league career ... Lucroy is 6-for-12 this homestand but is just 2-for-16 against the Padres this season ... Quentin has hit safely in 20 of his last 25 games, batting .313 with 17 RBI in that span ... Yonder Alonso came in as pinch-hitter in the eighth for San Diego, but grounded out in his only at-bat, snapping a 12-game road hitting streak.
