National League Game Summary - Washington at San Francisco

(Monday, June 9)

Final Score: Washington 9, San Francisco 2

San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ian Desmond went 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBI to lead the Washington Nationals past the San Francisco Giants, 9-2, in the opener of a four-game series.

Jayson Werth knocked in a pair of runs while Denard Span scored twice during a three-hit night for the Nationals, who have won six of their last seven.

"I feel good," said Span. "I've been having good at-bats, getting deep into counts and whenever I get a pitch, I'm not missing it."

Stephen Strasburg (6-4) struck out seven and scattered four hits over six innings of one-run ball to earn his third consecutive victory.

The Giants had their five-game winning streak snapped as a result of Ryan Vogelsong (4-3) getting tagged for six runs on nine hits over six-plus frames.

"I felt like I had a good game plan, and I just didn't make enough good pitches," Vogelsong said. "It was just a bad night."

Werth doubled just out of Tyler Colvin's reach in the first inning to plate Span, and Desmond's triple to deep center missed Gregor Blanco's glove the next inning, allowing Wilson Ramos to score.

Brandon Crawford's two-out, RBI single in the home second cut the Giants' deficit in half, but Desmond stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the third and dribbled a base hit through the left side to knock in Adam LaRoche and Ryan Zimmerman.

Each of the Giants' previous five wins were in comeback fashion, but even they faced a mountain too big to climb when Washington broke the game open with five runs in the seventh.

Werth singled in the first run and scored later in the frame, while Ramos hit an RBI double and Desmond knocked in two more with a two-bagger.

Joaquin Arias' RBI single in the home eighth accounted for the final margin.

Game Notes

Eight of Washington's 12 hits went for extra bases ... Vogelsong was 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA over his previous four outings ... Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon missed a third straight game due to a sore right thumb.
