American League Game Summary - Detroit at Chicago

(Monday, September 9th)

Final Score: Chicago 5, Detroit 1

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Chris Sale tossed eight strong innings, Paul Konerko delivered an early two-run hit, and Max Scherzer was again denied a 20th win, as Chicago downed Detroit, 5-1, in the first edition of a three-game set.

Dayan Viciedo collected two hits and an RBI, with Josh Phegley driving in the other run for the White Sox, who have won two in a row after losing nine straight.

Sale (11-12) scattered four hits and one run, fanning eight and walking only one.

"This was as well as I've seen him all year," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of his starter.

A Victor Martinez solo homer was all the offense for the Tigers, who have lost three straight and six of eight.

Scherzer (19-3) was dented for six hits and five runs -- four earned -- with six strikeouts and two walks over four full frames.

Scherzer departed after the Sox put up three runs with two outs in the fourth. Conor Gillaspie kept the inning alive with a double and scored when Viciedo followed with a single. Jordan Danks followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners, then Phegley's dribbler back to the mound was thrown away by Scherzer, allowing Viciedo and Danks to cross the plate for a 5-0 game.

Martinez cleared the wall in left center with one down in the seventh, but Sale finished his outing by retiring the final five batters he faced.

Nate Jones followed suit in the ninth to close out the contest.

The game started on an inauspicious note for the visitors. Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera was ejected in the middle of his first at-bat, along with manager Jim Leyland, by home plate umpire Brian Gorman for arguing that Sale had hit him on the right leg with the second pitch of the sequence and then complaining again on the third pitch.

"I don't know if (Gorman) didn't understand what I said...but I didn't say anything to get thrown out of the game," explained Cabrera.

Chicago capitalized in its first turn at the plate, as Alejandro De Aza singled, Gordon Beckham walked and both ended up scoring on a two-out, two-run base hit from Konerko.

Game Notes

Sale has won five of his last six starts since Aug. 6 ... Despite the setback, Detroit leads the season series 8-6 ... Sale fanned Austin Jackson in the third inning to give him 200 on the season, making him the fastest starter in team history to reach the milestone, surpassing Javier Vazquez in 2007.
