National League Preview from The Sports Network
Saturday, April 12th (All times Eastern)
Chicago Cubs (4-6) at St. Louis Cardinals (5-5), 2:15 p.m.
Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Carlos Villanueva (1-2, 4.26) St. Louis - Adam Wainwright (1-1, 1.29)
(SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Wainwright hasn't received much run support in his first two starts of the season. The right-hander hopes that changes when he takes the mound for the Cardinals Saturday against the Cubs.
Wainwright will be trying to build on two solid starts against the Reds and Pirates. He has pitched seven innings both times, but the Cardinals have posted a total of two runs in those contests. He's 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 31 games (22 starts) all-time against the Cubs, but that includes only a 2-6 mark at Busch Stadium.
Carlos Villanueva makes his fourth appearance (2nd start) for the Cubs. His first two contests came in extra-inning relief appearances at Pittsburgh. The right-hander then threw five solid innings in an 8-3 home win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.
Villanueva is 5-4 with a 3.44 ERA in 31 games (10 starts) against the Cardinals.
The Cubs, who posted a 6-3 win in 11 innings in Friday's opener, need one more victory this weekend to capture their first series since taking two-of-three in Cincinnati, Sept. 9-11 of last season.
Chicago is winless in its last eight series dating to last year.
Last night, Welington Castillo crushed a three-run homer in the 11th inning to lift the Cubs to victory. Nate Schierholtz opened the 11th with a double, his fourth hit of the game. After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk by Trevor Rosenthal (0-1), Ryan Kalish popped up a safety squeeze that was caught by catcher Yadier Molina.
Castillo followed by launching his second home run of the season to left- center field.
The Cardinals, who erased a 3-1 deficit in the ninth against Jose Veras, couldn't rally a second time. Hector Rondon worked around a two-out walk to record his first career save. Justin Grimm (1-0) rebounded from consecutive four-pitch walks to preserve the 3-3 tie in the 10th.
Rondon has a 16-inning scoreless streak dating to Sept. 3 of last season (15 appearances).
The Cardinals were 12-7 versus the Cubs a year ago.
