National League Preview from The Sports Network

Wednesday, August 20 (All times Eastern)

San Francisco Giants (65-59) at Chicago Cubs (55-70), 8:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Francisco - Jake Peavy (1-3, 3.86) Chicago - Edwin Jackson (6-13, 5.74)

(SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants acquired Jake Peavy for a reason.

The veteran right-hander finally recorded his first win in 19 starts -- and first in four appearances for the Giants -- in his most recent outing, and he'll try to make it two straight when San Francisco visits Wrigley Field on Wednesday night for the second of a three-game series.

Peavy picked up a 7-1 defeat of the Chicago White Sox last Wednesday to end a drought that had seen him lose 12 straight decisions since an 8-1 win at Toronto on April 25, while he was with the Boston Red Sox.

In his first three starts with the Giants after a July 26 trade, he was 0-3 with a 4.82 earned run average.

A hot streak from Peavy couldn't come at a better time for San Francisco, which leads the chase for the National League's second wild card position, but trails the Los Angeles Dodgers by 4 1/2 games in the NL's West Division.

The Giants have lost five straight on the road and seven of 10 overall.

Peavy dropped a 2-0 decision to the Cubs while with the Red Sox in June, and was beaten, 8-3, on his last visit to Wrigley, while with the White Sox in 2013.

He's opposed by Edwin Jackson, who's lost five decisions in his last six home starts and has won just one of his last 10 overall.

He was on the losing end of a 6-2 decision against Milwaukee at home on Thursday after allowing five runs in 4 2/3 innings. His 5.74 ERA for the season is eight-tenths of a run higher than the next pitcher with the requisite amount of innings pitched.

Jackson dropped a 5-0 verdict to the Giants in San Francisco on May 28.

On Tuesday, Anthony Rizzo smacked a two-run homer as the Cubs defeated San Francisco, 2-0, in a rain-shortened series opener. The game was called due to an unplayable field following a 4-hour rain, 34-minute rain delay.

Rizzo also added a double, posting two of the three hits for Chicago, which has won three games in a row.

Tsuyoshi Wada (3-1) allowed six hits and struck out three in his first career shutout.

Angel Pagan and Joaquin Arias both went 2-for-3 for the Giants, who had won three of their last four games coming in.

Ryan Vogelsong (7-9) spun his third career complete game, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks.
