National League Game Summary - Chicago at San Diego

(Friday, May 23rd)

Final Score: San Diego 11, Chicago 1

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chase Headley knocked in three runs and the Padres got homers from Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal in an 11-1 rout of the Chicago Cubs.

Tim Stauffer (2-0) allowed two hits over five innings to get the win in his first start since May 14, 2012. The 31-year-old right-handed long reliever was pressed into the rotation due to Robbie Erlin hitting the disabled list. Stauffer didn't disappoint, as he had five strikeouts and walked one batter.

This was Stauffer's first victory as a starter since Sept. 16, 2011 against Arizona. He made 55 appearances out of the Padres bullpen in between starts.

"We talked about it internally about the experience," Padres manager Bud Black said of Stauffer. "He's been out there before. Giving us five was great based on what we have to do tomorrow."

Black said the Padres would bring up Billy Buckner from Triple-A El Paso to start Saturday's contest. Buckner takes the spot of Andrew Cashner, who is also on the DL.

Seth Smith, Alonso and Grandal each ended with two RBI. Cameron Maybin had a pair of doubles and scored three times, as the Padres snapped a four-game skid.

Edwin Jackson (3-4) surrendered nine hits and eight runs over four innings for the Cubs, who failed to build on Thursday's 5-1 win in the opener of this four-game set.

"Today was just a terrible job making adjustments all around," said Jackson. "No excuses, just flat out terrible job at making adjustments."

Welington Castillo recorded the lone RBI for the Cubs.

Stauffer had a huge lead to work with, as the Padres built a 7-0 lead after two innings. Everth Cabrera singled to start the home first, Maybin doubled and Smith followed with a two-run single to right. One out later, Alonso homered to right field.

Grandal led off the home second with a homer to left, and Headley doubled in two more later in the frame.

Headley tacked on an RBI base hit in the fourth before the Cubs finally broke through in the seventh on Castillo's run-scoring single.

The Padres added three more in the home seventh, highlighted by Jedd Gyorko's RBI double.

Game Notes
