National League Game Summary - Cincinnati at Colorado, Game One

(Sunday, August 17)

Final Score: Colorado 10, Cincinnati 9

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Stubbs ended an improbable comeback for the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a doubleheader on Sunday.

The Rockies entered the ninth inning trailing by four runs and pushed five across, three coming on Stubbs' walk-off home run to give Colorado a stunning 10-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Aroldis Chapman entered in a non-save situation with the Reds leading 9-5 in the ninth and walked all four batters he faced. After his payoff pitch to Charlie Culberson was well off the plate and forced in a run, Chapman was taken out in favor of J.J. Hoover.

Wilin Rosario made it 9-7 with a sacrifice fly to left, and Hoover (1-9) retired Charlie Blackmon on a sharp lineout to right before Stubbs crushed one to deep left-center and barely over the wall for the game-winner.

"It didn't get out by much," Stubbs said.

Nolan Arenado went 4-for-4 with an RBI while Corey Dickerson and Charlie Blackmon each added solo homers for the Rockies, who pounded out 14 hits.

The turnaround made a winner of Rex Brothers (4-5) despite the reliever giving up two runs in the ninth.

Jay Bruce went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI while Kristopher Negron added a solo blast for the Reds, whose starter, Mat Latos (5-3), only lasted five innings.

"It's a very difficult loss to take," Reds manager Bryan Price said.

These teams split the first two games of this four-game set, and Saturday's meeting was postponed because of a water main break outside of the stadium.

Another halt in play occurred in the first inning of Sunday's opener, this time by rain after Dickerson doubled in Stubbs with the game's first run.

Following a 21-minute delay, Dickerson scored on Arenado's base hit, and Colorado went up 3-0 when Blackmon launched his 15th home run of the season in the second frame.

Jordan Lyles, though, coughed up the lead in the middle stages.

Bruce put the Reds on the board in the fourth with a blast to right, a two-run variety after Lyles plunked Zack Cozart to lead off the inning. The Reds did not have a hit to that point.

Cozart accounted for three runs in the fifth, two coming on his looping single to short center and the other when he scored on a wild pitch.

Lyles was pulled after five innings having surrendered five runs on five hits, and Franklin Morales took over in the sixth and was greeted by Negron's fourth home run of the year.

Ryan Ludwick added a sacrifice fly later in the sixth for a 7-3 lead for the Reds, whose bullpen was shaky all game.

Sam LeCure served up Dickerson's leadoff blast in the seventh and was pulled with two on and no outs. Michael McKenry singled to load the bases off Jumbo Diaz, and the burly righty limited the damage to Josh Rutledge's sac fly.

Colorado put the tying run on the eighth, but Jonathan Broxton got Michael Cuddyer to bounce into a threat-killing 6-4-3 double play.

Billy Hamilton doubled to lead off the top of the ninth and came around on a Bruce base hit, and Bruce scored on Brayan Pena's single to left.

Game Notes

Before the game, Todd Helton became the first player to have his number (No. 17) retired by the Rockies ... Latos struck out seven and scattered three runs on eight hits and three walks ... Chapman became the first pitcher to face at least four batters, walk them all and get no outs in game since Kansas City's Miguel Asencio did so in 2002 ... Game time: 3:59.
