American League Game Summary - Oakland at Tampa Bay

(Wednesday, May 21st)

Final Score: Oakland 3, Tampa Bay 2

St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Moss homered and the Oakland Athletics needed just one hit to take a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.

The A's walked seven times and reached base on two Tampa Bay errors in their fifth straight win. Starter Tommy Milone (2-3) surrendered two runs on five hits with three strikeouts across 5 2/3 innings to earn the win.

"He's pitching with a lot of confidence right now," Athletics manager Bob Melvin said of Milone. "It was a terrific outing."

It was the first time since at least 1914 the A's won a regular-season game with just one hit. It was also the first time that the Rays lost throwing a one-hit game.

James Loney and Yunel Escobar both supplied two hits and an RBI in Tampa Bay's fourth straight defeat. Erik Bedard (2-2) tossed a sold 5 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit and three runs -- one earned -- in the loss.

"It's really one of the more unusual games to lose," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. "It was an awkward kind of night."

The two teams will conclude the three-game set on Thursday.

Oakland took a 2-0 lead in the second. Yoenis Cespedes reached on a throwing error and Derek Norris and Moss were walked to load the bases with one out. Two batters later, Josh Reddick grounded to second baseman Sean Rodriguez, whose throw missed second base and sailed into left field. Cespedes and Moss both scored on the play.

Oakland's lone hit of the game came on Moss' solo shot to right, which gave the A's a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

The Rays got on the board in the sixth. Milone gave up a single to Wil Myers and a walk to Evan Longoria before Loney's single to shallow center field brought in a run.

After Milone got two pop-up outs, Fernando Rodriguez came on to face Escobar, who singled up the middle to score Longoria and make it a 3-2 game.

Luke Gregerson took the mound and gave up a single to Loney with one out in the eighth. Kevin Kiermaier replaced Loney as a pinch-runner before Matt Joyce singled to left to put runners on the corners.

Fernando Abad came on to pitch and loaded the bases by walking David DeJesus. Abad escaped the jam after getting Escobar to ground into a double-play.

Sean Doolittle spun a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to earn his fourth save of the season.

Game Notes

The A's are the first team to reach 30 wins in the majors. It is the first time that the A's have sole possession of the best record in baseball since September 23, 2002 ... Bedard's homerless streak ended at 50 innings after Moss' blast in the fourth. The last homer he gave up was on Sep. 16, 2013 vs the Reds ... This is the second time in Oakland history that the team had at least three times as many runs as hits. The A's had eight runs on two hits on April 12, 1994 against Toronto ... The Rays have lost five straight to the A's.
