Rangers give Cruz qualifying offer

Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers have made a qualifying offer to free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz prior to Monday's deadline to do so.

Cruz, who sat out a portion of the 2013 season while serving a 50-game suspension as part of the Biogenesis scandal, has until next Monday to accept or decline the one-year, $14.1 million tender. If the offer is declined, the Rangers will receive a compensatory pick between the first and second rounds of next June's First-Year Player Draft if he signs with another team.

The 33-year-old was having a strong year prior to his suspension in early August and finished with 27 home runs, 76 RBI and a .266 average while earning a spot on the American League All-Star squad. Over the past five seasons, Cruz has averaged 27 homers and 81 RBI along with a .272 average.

Texas opted not to extend qualifying offers to any of its remaining free agents, a list that includes closer Joe Nathan, catcher A.J. Pierzynski, designated hitter Lance Berkman, outfielder David Murphy and pitcher Colby Lewis.
