National League Game Summary - Chicago at Milwaukee

(Friday, April 25th)

Final Score: Milwaukee 5, Chicago 2

Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Lyle Overbay homered to back Matt Garza's strong outing, and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game set from Miller Park.

Garza earned his first win as a Brewer, allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings against his former team.

Garza (1-2) signed a four-year, $50 million deal in the offseason after spending the previous two-plus seasons with the Cubs.

"He really went after guys," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Garza's performance. "His fastball was excellent and he just went after guys. We're playing good baseball."

Francisco Rodriguez earned his 10th save of the season.

Carlos Gomez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Ryan Braun also collected three hits with an RBI and a run scored for Milwaukee, which has won six of its last seven games.

Scooter Gennett, Jonathon Lucroy and Aramis Ramirez all knocked in a run for the Brewers.

Chicago starter Carlos Villanueva (1-5) took the loss after he allowed five runs on 11 hits over five frames.

Emilio Bonifacio and Ryan Sweeney each had an RBI in the setback, Chicago's third in a row.

"The first inning obviously didn't start off well," said Cubs manager Rick Renteria. "Obviously not a very clean first inning. (Garza) goes right after hitters and he knows what he's doing. You have to tip your hat off to him a little bit."

Milwaukee scored two runs in the first on three straight hits to open the frame. Gomez singled to left, then stole second and scored on a Gennett double.

Braun knocked in Gennett in the next at-bat with a single to left that staked the Brewers to a 2-0 lead.

Chicago got one back in the top of the third on an Bonifacio single that plated Sweeney, who led off the inning with a walk.

Lucroy increased the cushion in the home half of the third with an RBI single.

Overbay homered to lead off the fourth inning and Ramirez knocked in Braun in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to left that gave the Brewers a 5-1 advantage.

Sweeney's RBI groundout in the seventh accounted for the final margin.

Zach Duke struck out the side in the eighth and Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth to close it out.

Game Notes

Rodriguez tied Robb Nen for 18th on the all-time saves list with 314 ... Braun extended his hitting streak against Chicago to 11 games. He has hit safely in 15 of his last 17 games ... Chicago was 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
