National League Game Summary - Washington at Atlanta

Final Score: Atlanta 7, Washington 6 (10 innings)

Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Upton finished 3-for-3 with a home run and the game-winning bloop single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 7-6 win over the Washington Nationals in the opener of a three-game set from Turner Field.

Chris Johnson singled with two outs in the bottom of the 10th off Jerry Blevins (1-1) and was replaced on first base by Jordan Schafer. With the count full, Schafer took off on Blevins' delivery to Upton and was nearly rounding third by the time Upton's hit landed. Bryce Harper fumbled the ball in right field, and Schafer scored without a throw.

Luis Avilan (2-1) pitched a scoreless 10th to take the win.

"When you play a team that's as good as yours or pretty equal, a mistake can cost you," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "It didn't cost us today. ... There's going to be more games like this than not."

Johnson also had three hits for Atlanta, which has won three of four meetings with Washington this season. Starter Julio Teheran scattered 10 hits and five runs -- two earned -- over six innings.

The Nationals got just 4 2/3 innings from starter Tanner Roark, who surrendered five runs on five hits. Ryan Zimmerman smacked his second homer of the year in the setback.

"It's important to win games, and both teams want to win," said Nationals manager Matt Williams. "It's good, it makes for good baseball, it makes for exciting games. One swing of the bat either way can make the difference, and tonight it was their turn."

Roark ran into trouble in the second inning, allowing a leadoff single to Upton and hitting Dan Uggla to put two on with no outs. Evan Gattis singled to center to plate Upton and Ramiro Pena crushed a belt-high fastball over the wall in right for a 4-0 lead.

Washington got a run back in the fourth on Ian Desmond's RBI single to left, but it left the bases loaded when Teheran struck out Jose Lobaton and got Roark to ground to first.

Teheran retired the first two batters of the fifth, but Jayson Werth singled and Adam LaRoche reached on Uggla's throwing error. Zimmerman guided the Nats back with one swing of the bat, taking a 3-2 fastball out to left to plate three runs and tie the score.

Johnson's RBI single in the home half of the fifth briefly restored Atlanta's lead, but Kevin Frandsen delivered a pinch-hit single in the top of the sixth, plating Lobaton.

After a scoreless seventh, Washington manufactured a run in the top of the eighth. Harper got things started with a bunt single, and Nate McLouth reached on an infield single with two outs. Denard Span's single brought Harper around.

Upton tied it with his home run in the bottom of the frame off Nats reliever Tyler Clippard.

Craig Kimbrel and Drew Storen both struck out the side in the ninth to force extras.

Game Notes

The Nationals had their four-game winning streak come to an end ... Harper had three hits for the Nats, while LaRoche and Lobaton had two each ... Washington had 14 hits while Atlanta had nine.
