American League Game Summary - Kansas City at Boston

(Friday, July 18)

Final Score: Boston 5, Kansas City 4

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonny Gomes' pinch-hit, two-run home run capped a four-run rally in the sixth inning, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals in Friday's opener of a three-game series from Fenway Park.

Xander Bogaerts added a two-run shot and scored twice, with Brock Holt driving in the other run for the Red Sox, who have won five of their last six games.

"One of the reasons we targeted him prior to last year was the way his swing is built and how it would fit this ball park," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Bogaerts.

Clay Buchholz (5-5) allowed 10 hits and four runs, but lasted just long enough to snag the win by working six full frames. Koji Uehara turned in a scoreless ninth for his 19th save.

Eric Hosmer finished 3-for-5 with two RBI for the Royals, losers in four of their last five. Salvador Perez and Alex Gordon each contributed two hits and a run batted in to a futile effort.

Scott Downs (0-3) was charged with the lead run while recording one out in the deciding frame. James Shields worked the first 5 2/3 innings, exiting after giving up eight hits and four runs -- three earned.

The hosts entered the home sixth down by three. Daniel Nava's one-out single preceded a two-run shot to dead center from Bogaerts which closed the Boston gap to 4-3. Stephen Drew bounced a ball over the low wall in right and, after David Ross fanned, Downs came on and gave up the go-ahead two-run shot to center from the pinch-hitter Gomes.

"He labored early, but then kind of settled down after we scored the three runs," Royals manager Ned Yost said about Shields. "Then got a pitch up to Bogaerts that he hit the two-run homer, and another pitch up on the double."

Burke Badenhop and Andrew Miller held the Royals off the board in the seventh, then Junichi Tazawa stranded Gordon on third in the eighth.

Uehara let up a two-out double to Omar Infante, but closed out the contest by inducing a grounder to second from Hosmer.

Infante doubled with one away in the first and came in when Hosmer followed with a base hit to give Kansas City an early lead.

In the home second, Bogaerts reached on an error, moved to third on a Drew single, then scored easily on a two-out hit to left from Holt.

The Royals struck back with two in the fourth. Infante led off with an infield hit and Hosmer followed with a ground-rule double, ahead of back-to-back RBI singles from Perez and Gordon.

Norichika Aoki began the fifth by singling, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Hosmer's base hit for a 4-1 Royals edge.

Game Notes

Gomes has hit six pinch homers with Boston, one off the franchise record held by Ted Williams ... Infante collected three hits and scored twice for the Royals ... Entering play, Shields sported a 9-13 mark vs. the Red Sox and 2-9 record in Boston.
