MLB Game Summary - NY Yankees at LA Dodgers

(Wednesday, July 31st)

Final Score: NY Yankees 3, LA Dodgers 0

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Pinch-hitter Lyle Overbay singled home the go-ahead run as part of a three-run ninth inning that lifted the New York Yankees to a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday in the finale of a brief two-game interleague set at Dodger Stadium.

Starting pitching was the story for much of the night, as New York's Hiroki Kuroda and Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers exchanged zeros throughout their respective outings.

Kuroda struck out eight over seven stellar innings of five-hit ball, while Kershaw fanned five and scattered five hits over eight efficient frames.

Boone Logan (3-2) relieved Kuroda in the eighth and stranded Dodgers on first and second before New York captain Derek Jeter led off the ninth with a walk against LA reliever Ronald Belisario.

After consecutive fielder's choices found Robinson Cano on second with two outs, Belisario (4-6) intentionally walked pinch-hitter Ichiro Suzuki before being lifted in favor of Paco Rodriguez.

Rodriguez quickly got Overbay in an 0-2 hole, but the lefty slugger lofted a single into shallow center field to score Cano for a 1-0 lead.

"(Rodriguez) was able to hang a slider and I got good wood on it," Overbay remarked. "We have to take care of business."

Jayson Nix then lifted a fly ball into shallow right field that second baseman Mark Ellis appeared to have under control, but Yasiel Puig came charging in from right field and knocked the ball out of Ellis' glove, allowing Suzuki and Overbay to score for a 3-0 lead.

"It was a pop up in a weird spot," Ellis said. "I heard Yasiel at the last minute and I just dropped it, simple as that."

Mariano Rivera made quick work of the Dodgers in the ninth, needing just 12 pitches to secure his 34th save of the season.

New York won for the second time in their last three games, while the Dodgers wrapped up a six-game homestand at 4-2.

The Yankees nearly got to Kershaw in the second when Vernon Wells and Brent Lillibridge smacked consecutive one-out singles to put runners on the corners, but Kershaw got Nix to pop out to shortstop before grounding out Chris Stewart to escape the threat unscathed.

Kuroda's only trouble came in the seventh, when Andre Ethier and A.J. Ellis stroked back-to-back two-out singles. The right-hander promptly fanned Skip Schumaker to keep the score locked at 0-0.

Game Notes

Kuroda went 3-0 in five starts in July and allowed just two runs while issuing six walks in 33 innings ... The Dodgers had won four straight games ... LA went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base ... Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez went 0-for-4 to snap his 11-game hit streak ... Prior to the game, the Dodgers acquired catcher Drew Butera from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.
