American League Game Summary - Oakland at Houston
(Tuesday, August 26)
Final Score: Houston 4, Oakland 2
Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Carter hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning and the Houston Astros rallied for a 4-2 win over the Oakland Athletics in the second of a three-game set.
Dexter Fowler hit a solo home run to help make a winner out of Josh Fields (4-6), who tossed a scoreless inning of relief to help the Astros snap a three-game losing streak.
Houston starter Dallas Keuchel allowed just two runs -- one earned -- on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over seven innings.
Jonny Gomes and Nate Freiman each drove in a run for the Athletics, who fell a game behind the Angels for first place in the AL West as the Angels defeated the Marlins on Tuesday.
"That's a tough team to play in those later innings because they can grind back," said Gomes. "You want to try and have more than a one-run lead."
Oakland starter Jason Hammel pitched well over seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits and a walk along with six strikeouts.
Trailing by a run in the eighth with Luke Gregerson (3-3) on the mound, Robbie Grossman reached base with one out on an error by Stephen Vogt and Jose Altuve was then hit by a pitch. Carter followed with a deep blast over the left field wall for his 32nd home run and a 4-2 lead.
"As soon as he hit it and I looked at it, I knew it was gone," said Keuchel about Carter's home run. "He doesn't need much to hit it out, and that one was gone the moment it left his bat."
Chad Qualls pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 15th save of the season.
Oakland scored in the first on an RBI single from Gomes, and made it a 2-0 game in the fourth as Gomes singled with one out and came home when Freiman followed with a double to left.
Fowler's leadoff blast in the fourth, his eighth homer of the year, made it a 2-1 game.
Oakland stranded runners at first and second in the fifth, and had just two more baserunners the rest of the game.
Oakland went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base ... Oakland has won nine of the 15 games with Houston this season ... Drew Pomeranz pitches for Oakland in the finale on Wednesday, while Brad Peacock will go for Houston.
