Phillies carry winning streak into meeting with Mets

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Phillies will try to extend their winning streak to five games when they open a three-game series against the New York Mets Friday night at Citi Field.

The Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals and won for the fourth straight time with Wednesday's 8-4 triumph, as Jimmy Rollins, Marlon Byrd and Grady Sizemore all homered to back six decent innings from Kyle Kendrick. Kendrick allowed four runs and seven hits in the start.

"Kendrick a little bit of a slow start, then minimized with a couple of runs," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "The bullpen shut it down in the end."

Byrd and Ryan Howard had three hits apiece in the 15-hit attack for the Phillies, winners in six of the last seven games. The Phillies have scored four or more runs six times in the past seven contests.

Philadelphia will start a nine-game road trip Friday against New York, Atlanta and Washington, and has dropped six of the previous seven games as the guest.

Taking the mound for the Phils tonight will be David Buchanan, who is 6-7 with a 4.21 earned run average in 14 starts. The rookie right-hander is 2-4 in his last six decisions and did not figure into the decision of a 6-5 loss to St. Louis on Saturday, charged with only two runs in five innings.

Buchanan is 2-4 in six road assignments and has lost both of his starts against the Mets.

New York just dropped two of three meetings with the Braves and is coming off Thursday's 6-1 setback in which the club produced only four hits. Eric Campbell drove in the lone run and Jon Niese was dealt the loss for giving up three runs and nine hits in 7 1/3 solid innings.

"For the majority I kept the ball down and in that last inning I left the ball up," said Niese.

The Mets have lost seven of 10 games and have scored no more than three runs in each of the past three. They hope to give youngster Jacob deGrom some support when he toes the rubber Friday and the right-hander has a 6-6 mark to go along with a 3.13 ERA in 17 starts.

DeGrom is 0-1 in his last two starts since winning five straight outings and allowed five runs across six innings of Saturday's 7-4 loss at Los Angeles. He is 3-3 in seven home starts and will face the Phillies for the second time. In a 5-4 win at Philadelphia on May 31, deGrom did not record a decision and gave up three runs in 6 1/3 innings with 11 K's and two walks.

New York has dominated the Phillies this season to the tune of an 11-5 record.
