Description: Former Cardinals and Nationals outfielder Rick Ankiel has decided to hang up his cleats. SOURCE: Brian Walton, TheCardinalNation.com
Insight: Ankiel didn't last long as a pitcher but he was able to resurrect his career as an outfielder beginning in 2007. His best season came in 2008 when he belted 25 HR to go with 71 RBI. He last played for the Mets in 2013.

Cold6/8/2013 8:55:00 PM
Description: The Mets waived goodbye to outfielder Rick Ankiel on Saturday.
Insight: The struggling outfielder was designated for assignment. It's been a disastrous season for the 33-year-old. In 128 at bats, Ankiel has already struck out 60 times. The open roster spot allowed New York to call up Kirk Nieuwenhuis from Triple-A Las Vegas.

5/18/2013 8:18:00 PM
Description: Mets outfielder Rick Ankiel has two homers in six games since joining the Mets.
Insight: Of course, he also has struck out six times in that stretch. Seven of his 18 hits this season are homers, and he has 41 K in 82 at-bats.

5/16/2013 9:50:00 AM
Description: Mets outfielder Rick Ankiel hit his first homer with the team Wednesday as part of a 2-for-4 game against the Cardinals, the team he played for from 1999 to 2009.
Insight: Ankiel has struck out an absurd 37 times in 74 plate appearances, but he has hit six homers and three doubles and has an ISO of .300, which would rank fifth in baseball if he had enough plate appearances. He could play himself into regular at-bats with the Mets, as the team's outfield is one of the worst in all of baseball.

5/13/2013 4:39:00 PM
Description: Outfielder Rick Ankiel has been signed by the New York Mets and could start in center field on Monday night, according to ESPN's Adam Rubin.
Insight: Ankiel batted .194 in 25 games for the Astros before they gave up on him. He's hit as many as 25 home runs in a season, but fantasy owners should stay away as he's likely to be in a platoon situation ... at best.

Cold5/6/2013 8:49:00 PM
Description: Astros outfielder Rick Ankiel has been designated for assignment.
Insight: Ankiel has been pitiful at the plate this season. An astounding 56 percent of his at bats have resulted in strikeouts. Ankiel's career isn't over yet but it's definitely not a good sign when the Astros are cutting you loose.

4/26/2013 11:50:00 AM
Description: Houston outfielder Rick Ankiel is a career .125 hitter (2-for-16) against Boston right-hander Ryan Dempster.
Insight: Ankiel isn't hitting for high average against anyone this season (.205 with 28 Ks in 44 at-bats), but he does have five homers and 11 RBI and an .813 OPS.

3/31/2013 11:11:00 PM
Description: Houston outfielder Rick Ankiel hit a three-run homer on Opening Day Sunday versus Texas.
Insight: He didn't start with lefty Matt Harrison on the hill (.228 career against LHP) but pinch hit and took Derek Lowe deep in the sixth inning. He has some power potential for AL-only owners.

3/28/2013 4:59:00 PM
Description: Rick Ankiel is expected to be the starting right fielder for the Houston Astros this season. He is hitting .432 with four homers in 45 at-bats this spring.
Insight: Ankiel has recorded a batting average of .235 over the past three seasons as a part-time outfielder for Kansas City, Atlanta and Washington. The last time he had 400 at-bats in a season was 2008, when Ankiel had a .264 batting average, 25 homers and an .843 OPS in 413 at-bats.

11/1/2012 11:34:00 AM
Description: Outfielder Rick Ankiel is considering a return to the pitcher's mound according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Insight: It's been a while since Ankiel pitched but when he did, he was actually half-decent (13-10, 3.90 ERA in 242 career innings between 1999 and 2004). He hit just .228 this past season in 68 games for the Nationals.

7/27/2012 8:45:00 PM
Description: The Nationals released outfielder Rick Ankiel on Friday. The 33-year-old had been designated for assignment earlier in the week.
Insight: Roger Bernadina (.288, 2 HRs, 17 RBIs) has benefited from more playing time since Ankiel's departure but that will change when Jayson Werth (.276, 3 HRs, 12 RBIs) returns from the disabled list next week. As for Ankiel (.228, 5 HRs, 15 RBIs), expect him to catch on with another team soon, though it's unlikely that he'll become a major fantasy contributor.

5/22/2012 10:05:00 AM
Description: Nationals outfielder Rick Ankiel is a career .417 batter against Phillies ace Roy Halladay (5-for-12).
Insight: Ankiel has done little to warrant fantasy owners' attention, but perhaps today he'll show something. He's actually one of two Nationals players with a career average against Halladay above .350 who is likely to be in the Washington lineup (Adam LaRoche is the other).

5/2/2012 3:50:00 PM
Description: Nationals outfielder Rick Ankiel is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against Arizona. No injury, just a day of rest.
Insight: The converted pitcher hit 25 HR in 2008, but this year is doing very little to warrant fantasy consideration.

4/29/2012 3:55:00 PM
Description: Nationals outfielder Rick Ankiel is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against Los Angeles. No injury, just a day of rest.
Insight: Ankiel hasn't done much this spring to open any fantasy owner eyes. He's batting .263 with one home run and three RBI. If he hasn't established himself at this point it's not going to get any better with the arrival of Bryce Harper and the return from injury to Michael Morse. Ankiel's fantasy value is low and will only go lower if he stays with Washington.

4/20/2012 10:11:00 PM
Description: Rick Ankiel had a big night for the Nationals Friday. The centerfielder went 3-3 with a double and a home run in Washington's 2-0 win over the Marlins.
Insight: That 3-3 showing accounts for almost half of Ankiel's season hits total (seven). Obviously it was a nice outing but we're not ready to anoint Ankiel as a fantasy king until we start seeing him do this on a more consistent basis.

4/9/2012 4:14:00 PM
Description: Rick Ankiel (quad) is hoping to return to the major leagues Saturday for Washington's home game against the Reds. Ankiel is currently rehabbing with Single-A Hagerstown.
Insight: Ankiel cracked 25 homers back in 2008 but since then he has hit just 26 home runs combined. Ankiel will probably get most of the playing time in center field for the Nationals, but that doesn't guarantee that he'll be productive.

4/5/2012 12:13:00 PM
Description: Rick Ankiel will join Mike Morse on a rehab assignment to Double-A Harrisburg. Ankiel is on the disabled list with a quad injury.
Insight: Ankiel is expected to return to Washington April 12th when he is first eligible to come off the DL. Ankiel hit .267 in nine games this spring and is expected to take over as the starting centerfielder upon his return. That's when Roger Bernadina's fantasy relevance will end.

3/19/2011 12:01:00 PM
Description: It appears as if Rick Ankiel is the leading candidate to start the season in CF for the Nationals. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: While outfield is a shallow position this year, Ankiel is best left to NL-only leagues for now.

12/20/2010 2:29:00 PM
Description: Rick Ankiel signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with Washington. SOURCE: JON HEYMAN
Insight: He strikes out too much to be a regular for any team but he can help Washington as a bench player and late innings defensive replacement. Even NL-Only owners will want to pass on owning him.

11/2/2010 7:03:00 PM
Description: Rick Ankiel's 2011 option will be declined by the Braves. SOURCE: DAVID O'BRIEN ON TWITTER
Insight: Ankiel is the classic one-tool major leaguer. He can hit some balls over the fence but gets out far too often to be valuable to a team. Expect him to find a backup role or minor league deal. He is unlikely to have any significant 2011 value.
