MLB Game Summary - NY Yankees at San Diego

(Saturday, August 3rd)

Final Score: NY Yankees 3, San Diego 0

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Ivan Nova marveled over seven shutout frames and Curtis Granderson supplied the offense in the New York Yankees' 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres in the middle test of three-game interleague set.

Granderson, in just his second game back since missing over two months with a broken finger, had a hand in every Yankee run. He crushed a two-run homer in the seventh and swiped a bag in the ninth before scoring an insurance run.

"He was a part of all three runs tonight," said New York manager Joe Girardi. "I've talked about how Curtis can change the complexion of a game really quickly and that's what he did tonight."

Mariano Rivera posted his 35th save to secure the win for Nova (5-4), who yielded just four hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Tyson Ross (2-5) didn't allow a hit through the first 4 1/3 innings, but fell on the wrong side of the pitching duel by serving up Granderson's homer. He struck out nine over six innings, as the Padres lost for just the fourth time in 12 games.

"Nova just outpitched Tyson just enough," said Padres manager Bud Black. "Tyson got a fastball out over the plate to Granderson and he connected but besides that I thought he threw a hell of a ball game."

Ross was cutting through the Yankee order early, striking out seven before allowing the Yankees' first hit to Lyle Overbay with one out in the fifth.

New York didn't get on the board in that frame, but did two innings later. Alfonso Soriano singled to start the seventh and Granderson lofted a deep fly ball over the right field wall to crack the scoreless tie.

Nova, meanwhile, had retired 15 in a row in between Alexi Amarista's second- inning double and Will Venable's lead off two-bagger in the seventh.

The Padres had a chance off the righty when Logan Forsythe walked with two outs in the frame, but Nova left runners stranded at the corners by striking out Nick Hundley looking.

Granderson singled off Dale Thayer to start the ninth, then moved into scoring position by swiping second with two out. Jayson Nix then grounded a base hit up the middle to score Granderson and make it 3-0.

Rivera, making his first appearance in San Diego since getting the final out of the 1998 World Series, retired the side in order in the ninth.

Game Notes

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter sat out the contest and is expected to be held out Sunday's game as well because of right leg and calf issues ... The New York Daily News reported on Saturday that Major League Baseball has rejected possible settlement requests from representatives of Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez is expected to receive a hefty suspension on Monday for his ties with Biogenesis of America, an anti-aging clinic suspected of supplying performance enhancing drugs to athletes ... The Padres totaled just five hits and were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
