MLB Game Summary - Washington at Oakland
(Saturday, May 10th)
Final Score: Oakland 4, Washington 3 (10 innings)
Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - John Jaso's RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Oakland Athletics to a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday.
Drew Storen (2-1) allowed a leadoff single to Alberto Callaspo before getting two outs to set up the final play. Jaso crushed the first pitch he saw off the out-of-town scoreboard in right and pinch-runner Nick Punto easily scored to help the A's to their third straight win.
"Sometimes certain guys come up key in games when you don't get many hits," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said of Jaso.
Sean Doolittle (1-2) recorded the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Jaso, who homered earlier in the contest, went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
A's starter Sonny Gray allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings and was let off the hook for the loss after Jaso sparked a late rally in the ninth.
Oakland trailed 3-1 in its final at-bat when Jaso slapped a single into left off Washington closer Rafael Soriano. Jed Lowrie followed with a double to center that plated Jaso and cut the deficit to one. Josh Donaldson brought Lowrie home a batter later to knot the score at 3-3 with a single to left.
"Going into the ninth with a two-run lead and a guy that hasn't given up a run in 25 innings and it doesn't happen for you, it's disappointing," Nationals manager Matt Williams said.
The Nationals got all three of their runs in the third, with Danny Espinosa driving a one-out homer to right center to open the scoring.
Kevin Frandsen then followed two straight singles with a double to center that scored Zach Walters and Denard Span.
Jaso got one back in the home half of the third with a leadoff homer to right center.
Washington starter Tanner Roark was charged with one run on two hits over 7 2/3 innings in the no-decision ... Frandsen was the only Washington player with multiple hits ... Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon and Espinosa each committed errors in the setback ... The Nats were 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position ... Oakland was 1-for-2 with RISP.
