Mets honor Piazza

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Mets honored former catcher Mike Piazza on Sunday before the team's season-finale against Milwaukee at Citi Field.

Piazza, arguably the greatest hitting catcher of all-time, was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame.

"I'm very, very proud to be a New York Met," Piazza said in a ceremony Sunday. "What an amazing history and a storied organization."

Met greats, including Keith Hernandez, John Franco, Edgardo Alfonzo and Rusty Staub were on hand for the festivities.

Piazza played for the Mets from 1998 through 2005, helping the club to its last World Series appearance in 2000. He hit 220 homers, drove in 655 runs and batted .296 with New York, earning seven of his 12 All-Star Game nods while with the Mets.

In 16 big league seasons with the Dodgers, Marlins, Mets, Padres and Athletics from 1992-2007, Piazza hit .308 with 427 homers and 1,335 RBI. He has the most home runs by a catcher in major league history.

The Pennsylvania native won the 1993 NL Rookie of the Year and was the 1996 All-Star Game MVP in Philadelphia, just a few minutes from his hometown of Phoenixville.
