MLB Game Summary - Chicago White Sox at Philadelphia, Game Two

(Saturday, July 13th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 2, Chicago White Sox 1 (13 innings)

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Michael Young hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the 13th inning and the Philadelphia Phillies split a day- night doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

With Simon Castro (0-1) pitching for the White Sox, Humberto Quintero was walked to start the frame but was forced out at second on a fielder's choice by Jimmy Rollins.

After a sacrifice bunt by Joe Savery, Young knocked a single to right. Rollins dove headfirst into home plate, just barely beating the throw. The Phillies lost the first game by a 5-4 margin in 11 innings.

"I think we were all pretty exhausted," Young said. "It was a long day, but at this point, obviously we need wins any way we can get them. So it was important to get the second one."

Savery (2-0) allowed two walks in the top of the inning, but did not allow Chicago to score to pick up the win.

Phillies starter John Lannan had a solid outing, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over eight innings, but the lack of offense left him with a no- decision.

The White Sox had numerous opportunities to score, but ultimately went 1- for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base.

Jeff Keppinger walked to start the 11th and Conor Gillaspie was intentionally walked with two outs. Tyler Flowers smacked a single to left, but Keppinger was thrown out at the plate.

An inning later, pinch-hitter Alex Rios walked, advanced to second on an Alexei Ramirez single and reached third on a wild pitch. However, with two outs, Keppinger grounded out to third.

Savery walked Dayan Viciedo to begin the 13th but Casper Wells grounded into a double play. He then walked Gillaspie before striking out Flowers.

Chicago had a chance to score early. With two outs in the first, Keppinger singled and Viciedo knocked a double to right, putting runners in scoring position. However, Wells flied out to center, ending the inning.

In the fourth, Keppinger reached third on throwing errors by shortstop John McDonald and Quintero. After Viciedo struck out and Wells fouled out, Brent Morel drew a walk. However, with runners at the corners, Flowers grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

Chicago finally scored in the fifth. Blake Tekotte hit a leadoff double, Hector Santiago was safe on a sacrifice bunt and Ramirez made it to first on an error by Lannan, loading the bases. Beckham then hit a sacrifice fly to deep left, allowing Tekotte to score.

However, John Mayberry would respond in the seventh, crushing the first pitch given to him by White Sox starter Hector Santiago, tying the game.

"I just wanted that one pitch back," Santiago said. "But other than that, I feel like everything was good. All my pitches were working. It was a good night all around."

In the ninth, the White Sox would spoil yet another opportunity to take the lead. Flowers ripped a two-out double to right, but Tekotte hit a grounder to Philadelphia reliever Luis Garcia, sending the game into extra innings.
