American League Preview from The Sports Network

Wednesday, July 24th (All times Eastern)

Minnesota Twins (43-54) at LA Angels of Anaheim (46-52), 3:35 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Minnesota - Mike Pelfrey (4-7, 5.40) LA Angels - Jered Weaver (4-5, 3.30)

(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins will shoot for a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Wednesday afternoon when the clubs meet for the finale of a three-game set at Angel Stadium.

The Twins opened this set at Angel Stadium with a 4-3 win on Monday, and posted a 10-3 extra-inning victory on Tuesday. Chris Herrmann's grand slam capped a seven-run 10th inning as Minnesota won for the sixth time in seven games.

Ryan Doumit drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th and Pedro Florimon later hit a two-run homer for the Twins, who are 11 games out of first in the AL Central.

"This is what we've been waiting for all year," said Doumit. "We're getting timely hitting, we're playing great defense, and we're getting great pitching."

Glen Perkins (2-0) grabbed the win despite blowing the save in the ninth, while starter Kyle Gibson gave up two runs on five hits over six innings.

Mark Trumbo and Albert Pujols hit solo home runs for the Angels, who have lost three straight and six of eight. L.A. is also 11 games out of first place in the AL West.

Tommy Hanson gave up just one run on four hits with eight strikeouts over 5 1/3 frames, while Ernesto Frieri (0-2) was pounded for five runs in the 10th to take the loss.

Minnesota gave up a one-run lead in the ninth, but went back on top in a big way in the 10th.

With two on and no outs, Doumit punched a single to center for the lead. Clete Thomas later walked to load the bags and Herrmann crushed a pitch over the wall in right-center for a grand slam. Later in the frame, Florimon crushed a two-run homer for a 10-3 advantage.

"It's hard to believe that I got my first grand slam," said Herrmann. "It was an inside cutter and I really got a good swing on it."

The Angels went down quietly in the bottom of the 10th.

The Twins will send Mike Pelfrey to the rubber today and he'll try to remain perfect for his career against the Angels. Pelfrey is 3-0 with a 4.95 ERA in three career starts against L.A. and he beat the Angels back on April 16 by tossing five innings of four-run ball.

However, Pelfrey only has one win over his last 11 starts, posting a 1-4 mark during that stretch. The big righty logged a no-decision in his last trip to the mound, allowing two runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings in Friday's 3-2 win over Cleveland.

Meanwhile, the Angels hope Jered Weaver can continue his excellent start to the month when he takes the hill on Wednesday. Three of Weaver's four victories this season have come in July and he is 3-1 with a 1.73 ERA in four outings this month.

After losing his last start before the All-Star break on July 13 in Seattle, Weaver rebounded on Friday with a win against Oakland. He allowed just four hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings, while striking out eight and walking four.

Weaver has had success against the Twins over the years, going 7-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 13 career games. Minnesota batters are hitting only .201 against Weaver in this matchup.

The Twins have won all four games against L.A. this season after the Angels claimed six of nine meetings in 2012. Minnesota was 0-3 in Anaheim last season.
