MLB Game Summary - Oakland at NY Mets

(Tuesday, June 24)

Final Score: NY Mets 10, Oakland 1

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Young slammed a pair of solo home runs and scored three times, as the Mets routed Oakland by a 10-1 count in the opener of a two-game interleague set on Tuesday.

Travis d'Arnaud clubbed a three-run shot, while Curtis Granderson added a two- run blast and drove in three for the Mets, winners in three straight games.

Bartolo Colon (8-5) scattered four hits and one run while striking out eight over eight strong innings against the team he pitched for the previous two seasons.

Yoenis Cespedes knocked in the lone run for the Athletics, who have lost two in a row following a five-game win streak.

Scott Kazmir (9-3) was punctured for eight hits and seven runs over just three full frames in defeat.

"It's almost shocking to see him give up some runs," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "He just got some balls up and they didn't miss 'em. The wind was blowing out to left and they got some balls in the air and took advantage of it."

New York went ahead to stay by denting Kazmir for seven runs combined in the second and third frames.

In the former, Eric Campbell hit a leadoff double and scored on Granderson's homer to right which put the hosts up 2-1. Young followed with his first round-tripper of the evening, a shot to left which provided a two-run cushion.

Daniel Murphy started the latter with a leadoff single, moved to third on a David Wright double and later crossed home on a Granderson groundout. Young then walked and d'Arnaud deposited a Kazmir offering over the wall in left for a 7-1 contest.

For the 25-year-old backstop, it was his first homer since May 12 against the Yankees and a much-needed boost to his confidence, which was shaken before a 16-game stint in Las Vegas.

"I had a long conversation with myself in the mirror," said d'Arnaud. "I realized that 95 percent of it was mental. Five percent was physical and technical. I feel like I'm in a good place now."

Young stroked a two-out solo homer in the fifth off Jim Johnson, then the Mets struck twice more in the home sixth thanks to Murphy's RBI single and Wright's run-scoring groundout.

Colon surrendered his lone run in the first, with Brandon Moss hitting a two- out single and scoring on a Cespedes double.

The 41-year-old did not allow a runner beyond first base for the remainder of his outing, setting down the final 10 batters after a two-out hit from Coco Crisp in the fifth.

"What he did tonight was what he did for us all last year and the year before," A's catcher Stephen Vogt said of his former teammate. "He's so frustrating to play against."

Game Notes

Colon improved to 6-0 in his last eight starts, and hasn't lost since May 6 in Miami ... Prior to the contest, the Mets recalled d'Arnaud from Triple-A Las Vegas and placed catcher Taylor Teagarden on the 15-day disabled list ... Before the game, the A's activated outfielder Josh Reddick from the 15-day disabled list and placed infielder Kyle Blanks on the 15-day DL.
