American League Game Summary - Oakland at Toronto

(Saturday, May 24th)

Final Score: Toronto 5, Oakland 2

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - R.A. Dickey pitched into the ninth inning and Melky Cabrera drove in two runs, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.

Dickey (5-4) was charged with two runs on five hits and a walk in 8 1/3 innings and improved to 4-1 in his last seven starts.

Brett Lawrie hit a solo homer for the AL East-leading Blue Jays, who have won five in a row and 10 of their last 12.

It's the latest the Blue Jays have been alone in first place since July 6, 2000.

Dickey was happy to contribute to the team's recent success.

"I think it's great for our team to be able to keep the momentum we've been generating over the past week and a half or so," the knuckleballer said. "It's nice to feel like you did your part. It's certainly satisfying."

Yoenis Cespedes had three hits, including a solo homer and a triple, but the A's dropped their third in a row. The AL West leaders are 5-3 on their nine- game road trip.

Jesse Chavez (4-2) took the loss, allowing four runs -- two earned -- on eight hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings.

Dickey put two runners on in the ninth inning and Dustin McGowan gave up a single to Cespedes to load the bases. Jed Lowrie followed with a sacrifice fly off Brett Cecil, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Cecil struck out Alberto Callaspo to end the game and pick up his third save.

Earlier, Cespedes homered to center field on a 1-0 fastball in the second inning for Oakland's first hit and his eighth home run of the season. Later, he hit a two-out triple off the center-field wall in the fourth inning but was left at third.

Anthony Gose scored from first base on Cabrera's hit in the third inning after Craig Gentry's booted the ball in left field.

Lawrie knocked an 0-2 curveball over the left-field wall leading off the fifth for his eighth homer of the season and the Blue Jays scored two more runs later in the inning on first baseman Brandon Moss' error to take a 4-1 lead.

Moss bobbled Cabrera's bouncer down the line and Chavez dropped his throw to first base, allowing Gose and Jose Reyes score.

"Those things happen. It's baseball," said Chavez. "Can't complain."

Reyes doubled in the seventh inning and scored from second base on Cabrera's ground out to short. Reyes never stopped running and beat the throw with a head-first slide to make it 5-1.
