National League Game Summary - Arizona at New York

(Monday, July 1st)

Final Score: New York 5, Arizona 4 (13 innings)

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Andrew Brown's two-run single in the bottom of the 13th lifted the New York Mets over the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-4, in the opener of a four-game set at Citi Field.

Brown's hit came with two strikes and two outs for the Mets, who improved to 2-2 on their current seven-game homestand. Marlon Byrd added three hits for New York, which won despite leaving 20 runners on base and going just 5-for-20 with runners in scoring position.

Cody Ross homered to lead off the 13th inning, but it wasn't enough for Arizona, which also struggled at the plate, leaving 11 runners on base, going just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and tallying just five hits over the final seven innings off the Mets bullpen.

Paul Goldschmidt added a two-run homer and Aaron Hill went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the NL West-leading Diamondbacks, who have dropped four straight, fell to 1-6 on their current 10-game road trip and lost for the seventh time in eight games overall.

Josh Collmenter (4-1) suffered the loss for Arizona, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks in one inning of work.

"It's really tough," Collmenter said. "Those are the ones that's disappointing. Sometimes you go through stretches like this."

Josh Satin began the final rally with a one-out double. After John Buck was intentionally walked, pinch hitter Matt Harvey sacrificed the runners up 90 feet with a bunt before Omar Quintanilla was intentionally walked to load the bases for Brown.

Collmenter jumped ahead 0-2 on Brown, but it didn't matter as the outfielder came through with his first career walk-off hit.

"He got called up because he swung the bat very well in (Las) Vegas. Each of his at-bats have been good," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Satin ended 3-for-6.

David Aardsma (1-0) got the win for New York. He yielded one run on two hits in two innings of work.

After chipping away with a run in each the seventh and eighth innings to draw within 3-2, New York finally tied the game in the ninth off Arizona closer J.J. Putz.

Byrd started the ninth-inning rally with a one-out double that hit just inches from top of the fence in left field. He then scored the tying run when Satin followed with a single to left. The throw home was late and dropped by catcher Miguel Montero, allowing Byrd to score and Satin to advance to second. Buck followed with a walk, but after Juan Lagares flew out, Buck was cut down at second trying to advance on a wild pitch when Montero alertly threw to second to get the slower Buck.

New York wasted golden opportunities in the 10th and 11th innings. Quintanilla was stranded at third in the 10th when Daniel Murphy flew out to right to end the inning. Quintanilla then lined out to first with the bases loaded and two outs to end the 11th.

Quintanilla ended 3-for-5.

Wade Miley started for Arizona and scattered six hits, struck out seven and walked four over 5 2/3 innings. Diamondbacks starters remain winless (0-8) since June 5 when he got the victory against St. Louis.

Shaun Marcum started for New York and avoided the setback thanks to the late- game rally. The right-hander, who picked up his first win of the season in his last start, deserved better after allowing just three runs on six hits, striking out two and walking three in six innings.

Goldschmidt started the scoring with his first-inning, two-run homer and Hill, who scored on Goldschmidt's homer after being hit by a pitch, added an RBI single in the second to increase the lead to 3-0.

New York finally got a run in the seventh when David Wright singled home Eric Young Jr., but former Met Heath Bell came on for fellow reliever Brad Ziegler with two on and one out and retired Satin and Buck.

The Mets got another run in the eighth against reliever David Hernandez when Quintanilla tripled off the glove of a diving Gerardo Parra with one out and then scored on Young's two-out double. However, Murphy followed by flying out to left to end the inning.

Parra was shaken up during the diving attempt and was forced to leave the game. He ended 1-for-4 at the plate.

Buck ended this game 0-for-4, striking out three times. The catcher has now struck out 17 times in his last 11 games.

Game Notes

Goldschmidt's homer was his 20th of the season, tying his single-season career-high set last year. Arizona still has 80 games left ... Prior to the game, Arizona placed pitcher Trevor Cahill on the 15-day disabled list with a hip contusion...The club has yet to name a starter for Cahill's next turn in the rotation, which is scheduled for Friday against Colorado ... To fill the vacated roster spot, the Diamondbacks recalled reliever Chaz Roe from Triple-A Reno ... Roe made his major league debut in this game, tossing 1 2/3 innings ... The D'backs have collected an extra-base hit in a major league- best 66 straight games this season (since April 20) ... Each team hung a jersey with the number 19 and the city name Yarnell hanging in their dugout in honor of the 19 firefighters who died in the Yarnell, AZ, wild fires ... There was also a moment of silence before the game to honor the fallen firefighters ... Starting Friday, the D'backs will wear a patch on their uniforms for the rest of the season to honor the fallen firefighters ... Satin has a seven-game hitting streak.
