(Saturday, July 5)
Final Score: Milwaukee 1, Cincinnati 0
Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Garza tossed his first shutout of
the season to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati
Garza (6-5) gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out nine for
the Brewers, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Aramis Ramirez drove in
the only run of the game.
Homer Bailey (8-5) took the tough-luck loss as he gave up just one run on
seven hits with four walks and eight strikeouts over eight innings for the
Reds, who have lost four of their last five games.
"Homer pitched a great game," praised Reds manager Bryan Price. "He wasn't
particularly sharp. Had a couple of leadoff walks that he worked around. But
to think that he went out there and pitched eight innings and was able to not
only compete but hold Milwaukee to one run ... was phenomenal."
Milwaukee scored the only run it needed in the first inning as Jonathan Lucroy
doubled with two outs and later scored on a Ramirez single for a 1-0 lead.
Garza retired the first 12 batters he faced before giving up a leadoff single
to Brandon Phillips to start the fifth inning. Jay Bruce lined out to first
and Phillips was caught off the bag on the play.
The Brewers had a chance to extend their lead in the sixth as Ramirez singled
with two outs and Khris Davis followed with a double. Ramirez, though, was
thrown out at home on Davis' hit to end the inning.
Zack Cozart's one-out double in the sixth was the only other hit Garza
allowed, and he quickly got out of the inning by striking out Bailey and Billy
Hamilton to end the inning.
Garza worked around walks in the seventh and eighth innings, and finished off
the game with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Milwaukee right fielder Ryan Braun left the game in the second inning with
lower back spasms ... Garza has won his past two starts ... Garza has four
shutouts and 10 complete games in his career.
