National League Game Summary - San Francisco at San Diego|
(Saturday, July 5)
Final Score: San Francisco 5, San Diego 3 (10 innings)
San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Belt's two-run homer in the top of
the 10th inning gave the San Francisco Giants a 5-3 win over the San Diego
Padres on Saturday.
The struggling Giants, losers in seven of their last eight games heading into
this one, trailed 3-2 after eight innings but got a jolt in the ninth when
Michael Morse tied the score with a solo blast off Padres closer Huston
Street. Street hadn't blown a save in 23 save chances this season.
"Morse saved us," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He saved our skin."
Hunter Pence led off the 10th with a double against Dale Thayer (3-3) before
Belt connected on a no-doubter to deep right field.
Sergio Romo (4-3), who was recently removed from the closer's role, got the
win after pitching around a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth and
Santiago Casilla picked up his second save of the season, striking out two in
Both starting pitchers allowed one run through six innings, with neither
factoring into the final decision. San Diego's Odrisamer Despaigne allowed two
hits and four walks in his third career start, while veteran Tim Hudson struck
out four for the Giants.
San Diego's season-high five game win streak came to an end.
"Street has been so good all year, pretty much automatic all year, so to be
able to tie it up off him was a pretty big deal for us," said Hudson. "To win
it is hopefully the momentum that we need."
Gregor Blanco got to Despaigne in the second inning with a solo home run to
The Cuban rookie then had trouble commanding his pitches in the third, issuing
a pair of walks after his error allowed Joe Panik to reach safely. With the
bases loaded and two outs, Joaquin Arias put a charge into a 3-1 offering, but
Cameron Maybin made a comfortable catch just in front of the warning track in
center to end the threat.
It took San Diego until the sixth to finally break through for a run against
Hudson, who had allowed just one baserunner through five. Brooks Conrad and
Alexi Amarista singled to start the frame and place runners on the corners.
Pinch-hitter Tommy Medica went down looking, but Seth Smith lifted a sac fly
to center field to tie the score.
The Giants reclaimed the lead a half inning later against a pair of San Diego
relievers. Alex Torres started the inning and walked Blanco and Brandon
Crawford before departing in favor of Kevin Quackenbush. The righty was called
for a balk, advancing both runners, and Panik made it 2-1 with a sac fly to
The home team pushed two runs across in the bottom of the seventh, however, to
take a 3-2 lead. Jean Machi allowed a one-out double to Yasmani Grandal before
Jake Goebbert legged out an RBI triple. Maybin's sac fly easily scored
The Padres were 28-0 when leading after seven innings ... Giants third baseman
Pablo Sandoval was hit by a pitch in the left elbow during his first at-bat
and left the game ... Despaigne has only allowed two runs in 20 2/3 innings in
the majors ... The Giants finished 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
San Diego went 1-for-6.
