American League Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Minnesota

(Saturday, July 19)

Final Score: Tampa Bay 5, Minnesota 1

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - David Price tossed eight shutout innings and the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Minnesota Twins 5-1 on Saturday in the second contest of a three-game set.

Price (10-7) earned the win after giving up just four hits with no walks and striking out nine batters to extend his scoreless innings streak to 16 innings.

"I've never been the pitcher that I am right now. It's awesome, it's cool," Price said.

Sean Rodriguez stroked a two-run homer and finished with three RBI while Jose Molina drove in a pair of runs for the Rays, who have won four straight games.

Kurt Suzuki provided the Twins' lone run and Trevor Plouffe doubled for Minnesota, which has dropped three of its last five games. Starter Phil Hughes (10-6) gave up all five runs on 11 hits across seven frames in defeat.

"Price didn't give us much of a chance," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said.

The Rays opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning. James Loney and Logan Forsythe both singled before Yunel Escobar grounded into a double play, leaving Loney safe at third. Loney scored on Molina's single to right and Rodriguez crushed a fastball into the second deck in left.

Minnesota hardly threatened against Price. Chris Parmelee and Eduardo Escobar both singled with one out in the fifth, but Eduardo Nunez grounded into a double play.

Forsythe walked and Escobar singled to put runners on the corners to open the seventh for Tampa Bay. Molina drove in Forsythe with an RBI groundout and Rodriguez's base hit up the middle plated Escobar for a 5-0 advantage.

Juan Carlos Oviedo replaced Price in the ninth, plunking Brian Dozier and issuing a one-out walk to Kendrys Morales. Suzuki's single to left brought in Dozier for Minnesota's lone run. Jake McGee then took the mound, getting Chris Colabello to fly out and striking out Parmelee to end the game.

Game Notes

Price has won five straight starts ... The Twins turned a season-high five double plays on ground balls. It was the first time they did that since 2006 and was one shy of the franchise record set in 1990 ... Morales extended his hitting streak to nine games ... Molina has hit safely in seven straight games.
