American League Preview from The Sports Network

Sunday, September 8th (All times Eastern)

Chicago White Sox (56-85) at Baltimore Orioles (76-65), 1:35 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Andre Rienzo (1-1, 5.03) Baltimore - Bud Norris (10-10, 4.01)

(Sports Network) - Right-hander Bud Norris can continue a successful stint with the Baltimore Orioles in a big spot on Sunday afternoon, when they host the staggering Chicago White Sox in the finale of a four-game series at Camden Yards.

Winners of three straight games, the Orioles have moved within a single game of skidding Tampa Bay for the second and final American League wild card playoff berth. The Rays hold a one-game edge over both Baltimore and Cleveland for that second spot.

Norris began the season with the last-place Houston Astros and was 6-9 in 21 starts before coming to Baltimore in a July 31 trade that sent two players and a draft pick back to Houston.

He won his initial two starts with his new team -- against the Astros and San Diego -- before falling against Arizona in a rare relief stint eight days later.

Four subsequent starts have yielded a pair of no-decisions and two victories, the most recent coming Sept. 2 at Cleveland, where Norris went seven innings and gave up a single run on four hits in a 7-2 Baltimore win.

He lost his lone career start against the White Sox after allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings.

For Chicago, Brazilian-born righty Andre Rienzo faces the Orioles for the first time in his eighth outing in the big leagues.

The 25-year-old debuted in late July and got no-decisions in his first four starts through Aug. 15, then picked up his first win with six innings of two- run ball in a 5-2 triumph at Kansas City on Aug. 21.

He's been hit hard in two consecutive starts at home against Houston and at Boston, allowing 13 runs on 14 hits in just nine innings over that span.

Chicago is 2-5 in Rienzo's starts.

On Saturday, Matt Wieters hit a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Orioles to a 4-3 win.

Pinch-hitter Conor Gillaspie launched a home run off Tommy Hunter (4-3) to give Chicago a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th. Baltimore, however, got to White Sox closer Addison Reed (5-3) in the home half of the inning.

A pinch-hitting Henry Urrutia and Nick Markakis strung together consecutive one-out singles, with the latter stealing second. Wieters then delivered with a base hit to right field.

Chicago took two of three from the Orioles at home in July.
