Description: Reds reliever Sean Marshall is progressing along in his rehab from surgery on his left shoulder according to MLB.com
Insight: Marshall has made only 31 appearances over the past two years due to shoulder problems. He had surgery in June to repair a torn labrum. Marshall should begin a throwing program in November and plans to be ready for opening day. 2015 is a contract year for Marshall.

9/16/2013 8:43:00 PM
Description: Reds reliever Sean Marshall was activated from the disabled list on Monday.
Insight: A sprained shoulder ended up costing Marshall most of the season. Now he'll get in about two weeks of prep work before the playoffs.

4/26/2013 6:01:00 PM
Description: Reds lefthander Sean Marshall (shoulder) has been taken off the disabled list.
Insight: He'll be active for Friday's contest against the Nationals. Once a starter, Marshall has been able to carve out a role for himself as a successful middle reliever since coming to Cincinnati.

5/19/2012 4:53:00 PM
Description: Sean Marshall was unable to pick up a save against the Yankees on Saturday. Marshall entered in the ninth inning of a 6-3 game but he gave up two runs on four hits and had to be removed by Reds manager Dusty Baker. Jose Arredondo was able to close the door for his first career save.
Insight: Baker has shown he won't hesitate to pull the plug on Marshall if he's struggling in the ninth inning. He yanked the lefty against the Brewers on May 9 after he gave up three hits in a 2-0 game. However, Baker brought Logan Ondrusek into that game, so he hasn't really tipped his hand on which pitcher he'll use if Marshall has to be removed from the closer role permanently. Marshall has picked up seven saves and 21 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings so his job shouldn't be in jeopardy yet despite his 5.02 ERA.

5/9/2012 4:17:00 PM
Description: With the Reds leading 2-0 in the ninth inning on Wednesday, Sean Marshall was unable to get the job done and had to be lifted by Reds manager Dusty Baker.
Insight: Logan Ondrusek ended up picking up the final out of the inning to earn the save after Marshall gave up a leadoff homer to Ryan Braun and then two singles. Ondrusek walked the first batter he faced to load the bases but retired pinch-hitter Travis Ishikawa on one pitch to lock down the win.

4/26/2012 3:28:00 PM
Description: Sean Marshall blew his first save of the season on Thursday against the Giants.
Insight: Marshall gave up a three-run homer to Angel Pagan to turn a 5-3 lead into a 6-5 deficit. Marshall has been mostly effective thus far as Cincinnati's closer, converting four saves and striking out 11 batters in 7 1/3 innings.

4/15/2012 5:24:00 PM
Description: The Reds finally gave Sean Marshall a save opportunity, which he converted for his first save of the season on Sunday.
Insight: Marshall gave up hits to the first two batters he faced but recovered to save the 8-5 win.

4/3/2012 9:21:00 AM
Description: Dusty Baker announced Monday that Sean Marshall will open the season as the Reds' closer.
Insight: Good news if you added Marshall when Ryan Madson went down. Even though Dusty Baker toyed with the idea of using a closer-by-committee, he's now committed to Marshall as his stopper in the bullpen. If he can hold onto the role all season, he'll provide 30-plus saves with excellent ratios.

3/27/2012 1:29:00 AM
Description: While it was originally thought that Sean Marshall would close with Ryan Madson out for the year, Reds manager Dusty Baker said he is open to a closer-by-committee.
Insight: Ugh. The dreaded closer-by-committee never helps anyone. It doesn't work for the team who employs the strategy and it definitely doesn't help in fantasy. Sean Marshall is still the favorite to get the saves in Cincinnati, but we'll have to monitor Baker's tendencies in April.

8/17/2010 12:04:00 PM
Description: The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports Marshall said he is open to moving to the Cubs' starting rotation next season.
Insight: Marshall has a 2.34 ERA over 61.2 innings in relief this season, and has started in the past. (SportsBuff.com)

6/7/2010 10:07:00 PM

Insight: Marshall has been effective out of the Cubs' bullpen this season, as he has a 1.91 ERA. (SportsBuff.com)

4/13/2010 10:41:00 AM
Description: The Chicago Sun Times reports Cubs' manager Lou Piniella said he will use Marshall as an eighth inning set-up man.
Insight: Marshall has pitched very well to start the season, and could fall into some save opportunities if something happens to Carlos Marmol. (SportsBuff.com)

4/6/2010 9:42:00 AM
Description: Marshall pitched 2.2 perfect innings in relief against the Braves on Monday.
Insight: The Cubs' pitching staff was otherwise very bad on Monday, but Marshall could be work a look in NL-only leagues. (SportsBuff.com)

3/25/2010 12:10:00 AM
Description: Marshall allowed only an unearned run over four innings against Texas on Wednesday.
Insight: Marshall has a 1.64 ERA in 11 spring innings, which should put him in contention for a spot in the Cubs' starting rotation at the start of the season. But he seems likely to wind up in the bullpen. (SportsBuff.com)

3/15/2010 10:33:00 AM
Description: The Chicago Sun Times reports Marshall has set himself apart from his competitors for a spot in the Cubs' starting rotation.
Insight: Marshall has a 2.57 ERA in seven innings this spring and has avoided having a bad outing, which puts him ahead of Carlos Silva, Tom Gorzelanny and Jeff Samardzija. (SportsBuff.com)

Description: Marshall avoided arbitration, agreeing to a one-year, $950,000 contract with the Cubs on Wednesday.
Insight: Marshall was 3-7 with a 4.32 ERA in 55 appearances with the Cubs last season. (SportsBuff.com)

Hot3/20/2009 9:39:00 AM
Description: Manager Lou Piniella officially named Marshall the Cubs fifth starter. Marshall is 2-0 this spring with a 0.63 ERA.
Insight: Marshall spent most of 2008 in the Cubs pen, but did make seven starts. He was generally solid with 58 K's in 65.1 innings. (SportsBuff.com)

Steady1/18/2009 12:00:00 PM
Description: Manager Lou Piniella told the Chicago Sun Times that Marhsall is the current leader for the fifth spot in the Cubs rotation.
Insight: Marshall made seven starts for the Cubs last season and was quite good. He finished with a 3.86 ERA and 58 K's in 65.1 innings in 34 appearances. The Cubs rotation is stocked and Marshall makes for a better than average fifth starter. (SportsBuff.com)
