National League Game Summary - Washington at San Diego

(Friday, June 6)

Final Score: Washington 6, San Diego 0

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tanner Roark had a career-high 11 strikeouts over eight innings and the Washington Nationals blanked the San Diego Padres, 6-0, to start a three-game series.

Roark (4-4), who snapped a three-start losing streak, allowed three hits and didn't walk a batter.

"He's been pitching like that for us all year," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "He continues to pound the zone with all his pitches, pretty impressive."

Roark has pitched 17 scoreless innings against the Padres this year, allowing only six hits with 19 strikeouts against one walk in two starts.

Denard Span walked to start the game and Anthony Rendon, celebrating his 24th birthday Friday, followed with a homer to left, as the Nationals posted their fourth straight win. Nate McLouth knocked in two runs for Washington.

Tyson Ross (6-5) surrendered five hits and six runs -- five earned -- over 5 1/3 innings for the Padres, who have just four hits over their last two games. It was the ninth time they were shut out this season.

"Tyson's stuff was good, but he made a mistake to Rendon in the first inning," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He got outpitched, bottom line."

San Diego lost for the fourth time in five games. The only win during that stretch came Thursday when the Padres had one hit in a 3-2 triumph over the Pirates.

The Nationals tacked on four runs in the sixth. A ground-rule double from Wilson Ramos plated Ryan Zimmerman. After Ian Desmond walked to fill the bases, Danny Espinosa was hit by a pitch on his left knee to force in a run. McLouth then singled to right for a six-run cushion.

Roark allowed a double to Yonder Alonso in the second, but not another hit until Rene Rivera's single in the eighth. After pinch-hitter Tommy Medica's single, Roark fanned Everth Cabrera and retired Seth Smith on a pop-up to end the inning.

Ross Detwiler set the side down in order in the ninth.

Game Notes

Rendon left the game after taking a grounder off his thumb and first finger. Williams said X-rays were negative and Rendon is day-to-day ... Padres infielder Jedd Gyorko was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday with left foot plantar fasciitis. The team also activated pitcher Eric Stults from the bereavement list.
