National League Preview from The Sports Network

Thursday, April 18th (All times eastern)

San Francisco Giants (9-5) at Milwaukee Brewers (4-8), 1:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Francisco - Matt Cain (0-1, 5.94) Milwaukee - Yovani Gallardo (0-1, 6.61)

(Sports Network) - Milwaukee righty Yovani Gallardo can cap what's been an awful week with a win on Thursday when the Brewers try to complete a three- game sweep of the San Francisco Giants at Miller Park.

Gallardo was charged with his first loss of the season on Saturday in St. Louis, as he was hit for six runs (5 earned) and seven hits in just 5 1/3 innings, dropping him to 0-1 to go along with a 6.61 ERA.

Then things got worse for him on Tuesday when Gallardo was arrested for drunk driving, as he registered a .22 blood alcohol level, nearly three times Wisconsin's legal limit of .08.

"Obviously, last night I made a bad decision," Gallardo said. "You know, I made a mistake. I'm sure I've lost a lot of respect from a lot of fans, but I just want to apologize. I apologize to the fans, to my teammates, my family. You know, like I said, it's just a bad call. It's something I shouldn't have done. I regret it. But at this point, you know, there's nothing I can do about it now. You know, it happened.

"Like I said, I just want to apologize to the whole organization and all the people in Milwaukee for my actions. It's not very easy. It's one of those things -- I truly am sorry. I'm going to make sure something like this never happens again. Whatever circumstances, consequences, whatever I have to do so this won't happen again, I'm going to do it."

San Francisco, meanwhile, will hand the ball to righty Matt Cain, who like Gallardo, is still searching for his first win. Cain has pitched well in two of his three starts, but is 0-1 wtih a 5.94 ERA. The inflated ERA comes from his second outing which saw him yield nine runs in 3 2/3 innings in a loss to St. Louis.

Cain bounced back from that horrific effort and pitched well on Friday in Chicago, as he allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings. However, he did not get a decision in the 4-3 loss.

The 28-year-old hurler has faced the Brewers nine times and is 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA.

On Wednesday, Blake Lalli's pinch-hit, game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Milwaukee to a 4-3 win.

Santiago Casilla (1-1) served up a single to Jonathan Lucroy to start the frame, but Alex Gonzalez was unable to move pinch-runner Josh Prince to second when he popped up a bunt to Brandon Belt in foul territory. Carlos Gomez then reached on an infield single and both runners advanced a base on Brandon Crawford's throwing error. Yuniesky Betancourt was intentionally walked to load the bases before Lalli ended it with a long single over the head of Gregor Blanco in left.

"I definitely was looking to swing and be aggressive," Lalli said. "Anytime you're in that situation, it's fun."

Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse retired the first 14 batters he faced before walking Brandon Belt in the fifth. He lost his no-hit bid in the sixth when Crawford led off the inning with a single.

"He was on his game today, he was really sharp," Giants right fielder Hunter Pence said of Lohse.

Overall, Lohse surrendered three runs on six hits and a walk over seven frames, while Betancourt smacked a solo homer and added a sacrifice fly for the Brewers, who have won three straight games.

Jim Henderson (2-0) spun a scoreless top of the ninth to pick up the win.

Starter Ryan Vogelsong allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings for San Francisco, which has dropped back-to-back contests following a 6-1 stretch.

San Francisco won four of its six meetings with the Brewers last season.
