National League Game Summary - Washington at Pittsburgh
(Thursday, May 22nd)
Final Score: Pittsburgh 3, Washington 1
Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Edinson Volquez spun six effective innings to help guide the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Washington Nationals in the opener of a four-game set at PNC Park.
Volquez (2-4) allowed just one run on three hits and two walks while fanning four to secure his first win in six starts.
"I thought he pitched a really professional game," said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle. "He gave up a solo home run and just kept pitching. ... It was just a really good effort."
Andrew McCutchen drove in two runs and Josh Harrison added two hits and an RBI for the Pirates, who have won three of their last four games.
In his second major league start, Blake Treinen (0-2) surrendered two runs on four hits and five walks over 5 2/3 innings to absorb the loss.
"It's nice to see him go out there and compete," said Nationals manager Matt Williams. "He gave us a chance, we just didn't have enough offense to get it done."
Ian Desmond's solo home run was one of just five hits for the Nationals, who have lost four of their last six contests.
A pair of two-out walks around a Harrison single loaded the bases in the third inning. McCutchen was then hit by a first-pitch slider to put the Pirates on the board first.
Desmond answered in the fourth when he stroked a leadoff home run to center field.
Harrison drew a four-pitch walk to start the bottom of the fifth and advanced to second on a flyout before McCutchen's RBI single up the middle made it 2-1 Pirates.
After recording the first two outs of the eighth, Pirates reliever Tony Watson walked two around a single to load the bases. Scott Hairston popped out to shortstop Jordy Mercer, however, to leave them loaded.
Harrison added an insurance run in the eighth with a two-out single to right that scored Chris Stewart, who doubled to reach base.
Pirates closer Mark Melancon walked Danny Espinosa to begin the ninth and then walked Denard Span with two outs to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. McCutchen made a sliding catch in center on an Anthony Rendon liner, however, to end the game.
It was Melancon's eighth save of the season.
The Nationals optioned pitcher Ryan Mattheus to Triple-A Syracuse to make room for Treinen ... Prior to the game, the Pirates activated catcher Russell Martin off the 15-day disabled list and designated pitcher Wandy Rodriguez for assignment ... Washington went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, while Pittsburgh finished 2-for-10 ... Volquez has given up nine homers over his last five starts ... The Nationals are just 4-22 when limited to 3 runs or less.
