American League Game Summary - New York at Baltimore

(Wednesday, August 13)

Final Score: Baltimore 5, New York 3

Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Eighth-inning homers by Jonathan Schoop and Adam Jones lifted the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-3 win over the New York Yankees in Wednesday's series finale between the AL East rivals.

Schoop's solo homer against Dellin Betances tied the score at 2-2 and Jones hit a three-run shot off Shawn Kelley (2-4) put the Orioles in front, as the Yankees bullpen blew the lead for Michael Pineda in his return.

"It was a big spot," Jones said of his homer. "We're playing good baseball."

The Orioles have won eight of their last 10 games, including Monday's series opener on the strength of homers by Chris Davis, Schoop and Nelson Cruz. But they also got bad news Wednesday, putting third baseman Manny Machado on the disabled list with a sprained knee ligament suffered Monday.

Tuesday's game was rained out and will be made up next month.

Francisco Cervelli hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, who have lost four in a row.

"We have to find ways to win games," Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said. "We need to play better."

Pineda pitched five innings for New York and was in line for the win in his first appearance since he was caught doctoring the baseball in an April 23 game against Boston.

The right-hander, who was placed on the disabled list with a shoulder strain after his 10-game suspension was up in May, was perfect until Cruz's leadoff double in the fifth inning. Cruz later scored on Ryan Flaherty's sacrifice fly for Baltimore's first run.

Pineda allowed just one run on two hits and no walks while striking out four.

Orioles righty Chris Tillman lasted seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits without a walk. The Yankees scored two runs against Tillman in the third inning after Stephen Drew led off with a double and Cervelli homered to left.

Darren O'Day (4-1) tossed a scoreless eighth. Zach Britton gave up a run in the ninth, but stranded a runner on third to earn his 25th save.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected from the game for arguing with home plate umpire Gerry Davis after Drew was ruled out to end the seventh inning for running inside the first-base line. Catcher Nick Hundley's throw had gone into right field on the play, a short grounder.

Game Notes

Tillman struck out three ... The Orioles start a nine-game road trip Friday in Cleveland ... The Yankees remain on the road to play Tampa Bay this weekend.
