National League Game Summary - St. Louis at Miami

(Tuesday, August 12)

Final Score: Miami 3, St. Louis 0

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarred Cosart pitched seven shutout innings and earned his first win with the Miami Marlins, who held on for a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

Cosart (1-1) pitched for the first time since making his Marlins debut in a 5-2 loss to Cincinnati on Aug. 1, a day after he was acquired from Houston in a six-player trade at the non-waiver deadline.

His spot was skipped in the rotation because of a sore oblique but he showed no ill signs against the Cardinals, giving up just three hits and one walk while striking out three to pick up his 10th victory over the season.

"He was great," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "You never really know when a guy takes that many days off what you're going to get but I think the time off for him was good. He was sharp."

Donovan Solano hit a two-run homer for Miami, which has won four of its last five, including the first two games of this three-game series.

The Cardinals, who have lost four of five, never really threatened until the ninth inning, when they had runners at the corners against Bryan Morris. But Mike Dunn came in to strike out Matt Adams and earn his first save this season.

"I speak on behalf of everybody, this is not the kind of game that we want to put together," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.

The Marlins scored all three of their runs off Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright, who was trying to become the majors' first 15-game winner this season. Instead Wainwright (14-7) allowed seven hits and a walk in seven innings.

Wainwright pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning by striking out Garrett Jones and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, but the Marlins scored three runs off him in the fourth to take the lead.

Casey McGehee led off with a double and scored on Saltalamacchia's single and Solano hit a two-out homer off the left-field pole to make it 3-0.

St. Louis' only baserunners in the first five innings were Mark Ellis, who hit a one-out single in the third, and Oscar Tavares, who walked in the fifth and was erased on a double play.

Cosart escaped the sixth after giving up a leadoff single to Ellis, who went to second when Matt Carpenter reached on an error. Jon Jay singled in the seventh but went nowhere.

Game Notes

Solano, who spent seven years in the Cardinals system before he was signed by the Marlins in 2011, hit his second homer of the season ... Cosart is 10-8 overall this season ... Wainwright hasn't won consecutive starts since June 10 and 21 ... The game was over in 2 hours and 34 minutes.
