National League Game Summary - San Francisco at Colorado

(Wednesday, April 23rd)

Final Score: San Francisco 12, Colorado 10 (11 innings)

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Five home runs weren't enough for the San Francisco Giants.

The sixth one did the trick.

Hector Sanchez's grand slam in the 11th inning gave the Giants the lead, and they held on for a 12-10 win Wednesday over the Colorado Rockies to finish a three-game series.

It was Sanchez's first career grand slam and first multi-home run game. He also hit a solo homer in the eighth to give the Giants an 8-7 lead but the Rockies tied it with a run in the bottom of the inning.

His go-ahead blast came at the end of a 10-pitch at-bat and after Chad Bettis (0-1) intentionally walked Joaquin Arias with first base open. Sanchez sent a 3-2 fastball well over the wall in right-center field.

"I hit it well," Sanchez said. "In this park, the ball flies."

Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer off Sergio Romo in the bottom of the 11th, but the Giants closer escaped a one-out jam after walking Drew Stubbs by getting Brandon Barnes to hit into a double play.

The Giants salvaged a win in the series after dropping the first two games and went 2-4 on a six-game road trip.

"It was one of those days where the ball was flying," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss.

He wasn't kidding.

The teams combined to hit nine home runs. Michael Morse also hit two for the Giants and Brandon Belt and Brandon Hicks added one each. Troy Tulowitzki and Charlie Blackmon homered for the Rockies, who lost for just the second time in their last seven games.

By the time the game ended after 4 1/2 hours, the starting pitchers were a distant memory. Giants right-hander Matt Cain pitched into the seventh, giving up seven runs on 10 hits and three walks and Rockies righty Tyler Chatwood allowed five runs in six innings, all on homers.

Sanchez homered on Matt Belisle's first pitch in the eighth inning, a 90-mph fastball over the plate to give the Giants a one-run lead.

The Rockies tied the game for the second inning in a row after DJ LeMahieu drew a leadoff walk, went to second base on pinch-hitter Charlie Culberson's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on Santiago Casilla's balk and scored on Blackmon's groundout.

Casilla pitched out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, escaping when LeMahieu lined out to right.

Earlier, after Tulowitzki's one-out blast in the first inning gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead, Morse led off the second with a homer into the Giants bullpen.

Barnes, LeMahieu and Chatwood hit consecutive singles to start the bottom second, sparking a three-run rally. Tulowitzki had an RBI single to cap it.

Hicks and Morse homered in the third, with Morse's three-run blast tying the game, but Blackmon's solo shot in the fourth put the Rockies back on top 6-5.

Rex Brothers relieved Chatwood to start the seventh. He walked Hunter Pence with one out and gave up Belt's two-run homer to right, his seventh of the season.

The Rockies tied it in the bottom of the inning after Blackmon walked, swiped second and scored on Nolan Arenado's slapped double down the right-field line off Cain.
