National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at Miami

(Saturday, April 13th)

Final Score: Miami 2, Philadelphia 1

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Former Phillie Placido Polanco scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Miami Marlins topped the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1, to even up this three-game series.

Polanco opened the ninth with a walk against Philadelphia reliever Phillippe Aumont (1-1), and Greg Dobbs, another ex-Phillie, followed by ripping a single that deflected off the glove of first baseman Kevin Frandsen to put men on the corners.

Aumont struck out Austin Kearns, but Polanco came home when Phillies second baseman Chase Utley couldn't cleanly field Chris Coghlan's two-hopper.

The Marlins picked up just their second win in their first 11 games and denied Philadelphia a chance to get above .500 for the first time this season. The Phillies (5-6) had won three in a row.

"I think it's huge, just for the morale," Coghlan said. "We've lost a lot of tight games and our record has showed that."

Miami's Jose Fernandez made his second career start and the 20-year-old was in line for his first major league win before Philadelphia tied the game on an error in the seventh inning.

Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels, who had been tagged for 13 earned runs in 10 2/3 innings over his first two outings this season, didn't allow a hit until Adeiny Hechavarria tripled to right center with two outs in the fifth.

"I'm still trying to get ahead of hitter early," Hamels said. "I was able to make an improvement there, but I wasn't where I was normally able to get that first pitch strike."

Fernandez followed with his first big league hit, an RBI single through the hole on the left side.

Miami went to its bullpen in the seventh and Domonic Brown led off with a single against A.J. Ramos. After Freddy Galvis drew a one-out walk, Erik Kratz grounded into what appeared to be an inning-ending double play. However, Marlins second baseman Donovan Solano airmailed the throw to first, allowing Brown to score the tying run.

A single by pinch-hitter Michael Young prompted another pitching change. Mike Dunn took over on the mound and struck out Jimmy Rollins after walking Ben Revere to load the bases.

Frandsen had taken over first base duties because Ryan Howard was replaced by a pinch-runner after stroking a one-out double to center in the eighth. The Phillies wound up stranding a man at third when Ryan Webb fanned a pinch- hitting Frandsen.

Steve Cishek (1-1) retired the Phillies in order in the ninth.

Game Notes

Fernandez scattered two hits, walked two and struck out five in six innings ... Hamels also tossed six frames, allowing three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. He lowered his ERA from 10.97 to 7.56 ... Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton missed his second straight game and is listed as day-to-day with a left shoulder contusion ... The Phillies were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.
