American League Game Summary - Oakland at LA Angels of Anaheim

(Monday, April 14th)

Final Score: Oakland 3, LA Angels of Anaheim 2

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - A pinch-hitting John Jaso clubbed a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Oakland Athletics to a 3-2 win over Los Angeles at Angel Stadium.

Jaso drove a 1-2 offering from Angels closer Ernesto Frieri (0-1) to right field with one out. Josh Donaldson had singled to lead off the ninth.

"(Frieri) left a fastball right in the zone and Jaso didn't miss it," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

Luke Gregerson earned his second save with a 1-2-3 ninth that was not without a bit of controversy.

With one down, second baseman Nick Punto bobbled a Howie Kendrick grounder and fired to first base. Kendrick was called out on a very close play that was upheld by a video review.

Jim Johnson (1-2), who was removed from the closer's role, earned the win after pitching around a one-out double by Kole Calhoun in the bottom of the eighth.

The Athletics improved to 6-1 on their first road trip of the season.

Jesse Chavez tossed seven innings in the start for Oakland, giving up two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and recording nine strikeouts without any walks.

"I just tried to match the other guy," Chavez said.

He was referencing Angels starter Hector Santiago, who was in line to get the win in the opener of this three-game set before Jaso's late-game heroics.

Santiago also went seven frames, with Yoenis Cespedes' fourth-inning home run among the five hits he allowed.

Albert Pujols knocked in both runs for the Angels. He singled home Calhoun in the first and homered to left-center field two innings later.

Game Notes

Oakland starters have allowed three earned runs over fewer in each of the first 13 games, the longest such season-opening streak since a 16-game run in 1981 ... The A's were 11-8 against the Angels last season.
