National League Preview from The Sports Network

Thursday, April 25th (All times eastern)

Chicago Cubs (6-14) at Miami Marlins (5-16), 7:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Edwin Jackson (0-3, 4.84) Miami - Kevin Slowey (0-2, 1.90)

(Sports Network) - Right-hander Kevin Slowey tries again for his first win with his new team - the Miami Marlins - when they host the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series.

Slowey was a 13-game winner for the Minnesota Twins in 2010, but slumped to 0-8 a year later and was out of the majors last season.

He signed a free-agent deal with the Marlins on Jan. 15 worth $750,000.

Miami has managed just three combined runs in his four starts this season, while he's allowed five runs in 23 2/3 innings, but is still 0-2.

Slowey is 1-0 in his career against the Cubs.

Chicago replies with righty Edwin Jackson, who's also still winless with his new team.

The veteran of 238 big-league appearances won 10 games with the Washington Nationals last season and signed a four-year, $52 million deal with the Cubs in the offseason.

He's lost three decisions in four April starts while combining to surrender 17 runs on 20 hits in 22 1/3 innings.

Jackson is 1-6 in eight career meetings with the Marlins.

On Wednesday in Cincinnati, Todd Frazier scorched a solo home run for the game's only run and Mat Latos struck out four over seven-plus innings, as the Reds slipped past the Cubs, 1-0, in the finale of a three-game set at Great American Ball Park.

Jeff Samardzija (1-4) suffered his fourth straight loss despite striking out eight and scattering seven hits and three walks over six innings for Chicago, which managed just five hits in dropping its fifth game in its last six tries.

Meanwhile in Minnesota, Rob Brantly went 3-for-5 with four RBI and the Marlins beat the Twins, 8-5, to split a doubleheader at Target Field.

Oswaldo Arcia hit his first career home run -- a three-run blast -- and Kevin Correia tossed seven solid innings as Minnesota took a 4-3 decision in the first game.

Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Marlins, who snapped a three-game skid. Chris Valaika and Justin Ruggiano each had an RBI.

Miami starter Ricky Nolasco (1-2) gave up three runs -- two earned -- on six hits over five innings to pick up his first win of the season.

The Marlins won four of six games between the teams in 2012.
