National League Preview from The Sports Network

Saturday, May 3rd (All times Eastern)

St. Louis Cardinals (15-15) at Chicago Cubs (10-17), 1:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Michael Wacha (2-2, 2.48) Chicago - Jake Arrieta (0-0, 0.00)

(SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Arrieta makes his 2014 debut when the Chicago Cubs entertain the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field in the middle installment of a three-game series.

Arrieta, who has been on the disabled list since March 30 with right shoulder tightness, went 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in five injury rehab appearances between Single-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee. The right-hander was traded from Baltimore to Chicago on July 2 last season and then compiled a 4-2 mark with a 3.66 ERA in nine games with the Cubs.

The lone career start for Arrieta against the Cardinals came Aug. 16, 2013 at Wrigley Field when he tossed seven shutout innings in Chicago's 7-0 victory.

Michael Wacha counters on the hill for the Cardinals.

The righty is 0-2 over his last three starts and is coming off a no-decision versus Milwaukee on Monday when he fanned nine over 6 1/3 innings. Wacha yielded eight hits and three runs.

Wacha is 0-2 in three road starts this year. His only road win in a starting assignment came June 11, 2013 in his first away appearance of his career. That was a 9-2 victory over the Mets. He's 1-0 with a 3.65 ERA in three games (2 starts) when facing the Cubs.

Anthony Rizzo finished with two hits, including a solo homer, and drove in three to fuel Chicago's 6-5 victory Friday. Welington Castillo hit three doubles and knocked in two for the Cubs, while Ryan Sweeney contributed two hits and an RBI.

Travis Wood (2-3) allowed six hits and three runs -- two earned -- with six strikeouts over seven solid innings. Hector Rondon tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his second save.

Jhonny Peralta slugged a two-run shot and accounted for three RBI for the Cardinals, with Matt Carpenter scoring twice and knocking in a run in defeat.

Adam Wainwright (5-2) was torched for six runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks over five full frames.

"We played a great ball game today," Wood said. "We were able to get to Wainwright early. Overall, we played just a solid game."

The Cubs beat the Cardinals for just the second time in the last nine meetings since last Aug. 17.

Wainwright entered the game with a 25-inning scoreless streak, but gave up two in the first inning on Rizzo's single.

"I was just very sloppy, a lot of balls in the middle of the plate," Wainwright said. "I did that the last time I pitched against them too."

St. Louis took two of three matchups with the Cubs at Busch Stadium from April 11-13 and has won seven of the past nine games in this NL Central showdown. The Cardinals were 5-4 at Wrigley Field last season.
