National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at Atlanta

(Tuesday, August 13th)

Final Score: Atlanta 3, Philadelphia 1

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Kris Medlen tossed seven-plus innings of one- run ball and Chris Johnson belted a two-run homer to lead the Atlanta Braves over the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-1, in the second of three games between the clubs at Turner Field.

Medlen (10-10) evened his record with a fourth consecutive victory. He allowed just five hits and one walk, struck out five and also doubled in a run.

Justin Upton went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored for the NL East-leading Braves, who improved to 3-2 on their season-long nine-game homestand.

The Phillies won the series opener, 5-1, behind a strong start by Cole Hamels, but failed in their attempt to post back-to-back wins for the first time since the All-Star break.

Ethan Martin (1-2), an Athens, Ga. native, was tagged for three runs on six hits over five innings in his third career start. The rookie has already suffered two losses against the team he cheered for growing up.

"It felt kind of weird being on the field and not in the stands," Martin said. "I thought I was going to be a little more amped up and have butterflies, but it wasn't that bad."

The Braves announced before the game starting second baseman Dan Uggla will be sidelined for at least 15 days as he undergoes corrective eye surgery. Uggla's replacement, Tyler Pastornicky, celebrated his call-up by singling to open the second inning and scoring the first run when Medlen hit a double over the head of Darin Ruf in right field with two outs.

"It's tough to see (Uggla) go down. He's one of my good friends," Pastornicky said. "It's definitely a good opportunity for me to come in and get some playing time. I'm excited, I'm anxious. This is what you work for."

Upton doubled to lead off the third, and Johnson brought him home by sending one just over the left-field wall and into the bleachers for his ninth home run of the season.

Medlen loaded the bases in the first inning and got out of the jam by retiring Cody Asche on a soft liner to second -- the first of 15 straight retired by the right-hander.

That string ended in the sixth when Chase Utley doubled with two outs and crossed the plate on Domonic Brown's base hit to center, but that was all the offense the Phillies mustered.

David Carpenter induced Jimmy Rollins to hit into a double play to end the eighth, and Craig Kimbrel shook off a one-out single in the ninth to lock down his 37th save, including his 27th conversion in a row.

Game Notes
