MLB Game Summary - LA Dodgers at Toronto

(Tuesday, July 23rd)

Final Score: LA Dodgers 10, Toronto 9

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Adrian Gonzalez crushed a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to lift the surging Los Angeles Dodgers to a 10-9 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle contest of a three- game series at Rogers Centre.

Andre Ethier added a solo shot in the eighth and finished with three RBI, while Mark Ellis collected two hits and three RBI for the red-hot Dodgers, who have won five straight games and sit atop the jam-packed NL West.

Gonzalez's blast made a winner out of Brandon League (4-3), who recorded the final two outs in the seventh. Ronald Belisario fired a scoreless eighth before Kenley Jansen nailed down his 12th save of the season, despite giving up a run in the ninth.

"You know in this ballpark it's a little bit like Colorado because no lead is safe," said Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly. "You have to keep playing and you have to keep going here."

Jose Reyes, Mark DeRosa and Jose Bautista each homered for the Blue Jays, who have lost a season-high six straight games.

"We did a lot of good things and when you put up that many runs you figured you stand a good chance to win," said Toronto manager John Gibbons. "But if you look at that lineup over there they can burn you in so many ways and that's what they did tonight."

Darren Oliver (3-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up Gonzalez's go- ahead homer.

Reyes ripped a two-run homer to right in the sixth to give the Blue Jays an 8-3 cushion, but the Dodgers scored seven runs over the next two frames to seize the lead.

LA loaded the bases with one out in the seventh before Ethier worked a walk to plate a run. Dustin McGowan then replaced Brett Cecil on the mound and served up a two-run single to Ellis to make it 8-6. LA left the bases full in the frame.

After J.P. Howell and League combined to blank the Jays in the home half, Carl Crawford opened the eighth with a single to center. Yasiel Puig then worked a walk before Gonzalez crushed a 1-1 fastball deep into straightaway center field to give the Dodgers a 9-8 edge.

Oliver bounced back with a strikeout of Hanley Ramirez, but Ethier laced a line-drive shot over the right-field wall to double the Dodgers' lead.

Belisario worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth before Jansen ran into trouble in the ninth, as Adam Lind clubbed a one-out, ground- rule double and Maicer Izturis walked.

After Rajai Davis flied out, J.P. Arencibia stroked a single to left to score Lind and bring the Jays within one. However, Brett Lawrie flied out to the warning track in left to end the contest.

Toronto drew first blood in the third when Lawrie smacked a one-out single and scored on Reyes' double to the gap in left-center. Reyes moved to third on a groundout and scored on Bautista's single to center to make it 2-0.

LA evened things in the next half inning when Ethier launched a ground-rule double to left-center to score Gonzalez, who reached on a fielder's choice. Ellis followed with a run-scoring single.

The Jays regained control in the home half when DeRosa belted a one-out solo shot to right. Davis followed with a double, moved to third on a single, and scored on Lawrie's sacrifice fly to give Toronto a 4-2 lead.

Bautista clubbed his 23rd homer of the season with one out in the fifth, but the Dodgers got the run back in the sixth on Jerry Hairston's two-out blast.

Toronto increased its edge in the bottom half when Arencibia smacked a leadoff double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Lawrie's single to left. Reyes followed with a homer over the right-field wall to make it 8-3.

Game Notes

The Dodgers have won nine straight games on the road ... LA starter Chris Capuano allowed five runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 frames ... Toronto starter Todd Redmond yielded three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings ... Prior to the game, the Dodgers selected the contract of pitcher Carlos Marmol, who surrendered three runs on four hits over 1 2/3 frames ... Toronto reliever Juan Perez pitched a perfect ninth to push his scoreless innings streak to 22 frames. It's the longest streak by a pitcher without allowing an earned run to begin their Toronto career, surpassing Victor Cruz's mark of 21 1/3 innings set from June 24-July 31, 1978 ... Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp missed his second straight game with an ankle injury. He is not expected to play in Wednesday's series finale.
