Description: Baltimore left-hander Johan Santana has a torn Achilles and will miss the rest of the 2014 season. SOURCE: Fox Sports
Insight: Santana was mere weeks away from making his Orioles debut. Now there's a strong possibility the 35-year-old will never throw another pitch in the major leagues. If injuries hadn't derailed his career there's little doubt Santana would have been a Hall of Famer.

6/3/2014 7:05:00 PM
Description: According to Roch Kubatko of masnsports.com, the Orioles plan to have Johan Santana join the rotation on June 19.
Insight: Santana was one of the best pitchers in baseball from 2004-08, but he's been plagued by injuries since 2009 and hasn't pitched since 2012 due to a torn capsule in his shoulder. He's worth stashing in AL-only leagues, but everyone else can take a wait-and-see approach.

6/2/2014 7:46:00 PM
Description: Baltimore added Johan Santana to its major league roster Monday and immediately placed him on the disabled list.
Insight: He could join Baltimore's rotation later this month. Santana can't throw as hard as he used to so he'll have to rely on his control when he returns to the big leagues.

5/27/2014 2:23:00 PM
Description: Orioles left-hander Johan Santana threw 4 1/3 imnnings in an extended spring training game and should be ready for a minor league rehab start shortly.
Insight: Santana has lost a lot of his velocity, throwing around 86-88 mph, but he knows how to pitch. Although he hopes to be ready to pitch with the big club in June, fantasy owners should take a wait and see attitude.

5/4/2014 1:05:00 PM
Description: Orioles left-hander Johan Santana is hoping to be back in the majors by June 1st. SOURCE: Jim Duquette, MLB Network Radio
Insight: Santana will make his first extended spring training start on Monday. He's lost a lot of his velocity but that's not necessarily a deal breaker for Santana, who was one of the craftiest pitchers in the big leagues during his heydey. Soon we'll find out how much the 35-year-old has left in the tank.

3/4/2014 5:40:00 PM
Description: The Orioles have signed Johan Santana to a minor league contract, according to Jon Heyman of cbssports.com.
Insight: Santana didn't pitch last season because of another serious shoulder injury and is a long way away from returning. He topped out at just 81 mph during a tryout last week.

10/31/2013 9:49:00 PM
Description: The Mets plan to buy out the rest of Johan Santana's contract. SOURCE: Adam Rubin, ESPN New York
Insight: Santana didn't pitch last season because of a shoulder injury. Even if Santana does make a comeback next year with another team it will only be a matter of time before he gets hurt again.

3/30/2013 9:07:00 PM
Description: New York lefthander Johan Santana will have season-ending shoulder surgery on Tuesday. SOURCE: Adam Rubin, ESPN
Insight: Another tough break for the former Cy Young winner. Jon Niese (13-9, 3.40 ERA in 2012) will have to be the Mets' ace now that Santana is done for the year.

3/28/2013 7:02:00 PM
Description: ESPN's Adam Rubin is reporting that a recent MRI on Mets starter Johan Santana's injured shoulder revealed some troubling results. It appears that Santana has re-torn the anterior capsule in his left shoulder and is likely headed for surgery.
Insight: Surgery would knock Santana out for the rest of the year. The veteran's career has taken a downward spiral since joining the Mets in 2008.

3/24/2013 2:27:00 PM
Description: Mets manager Terry Collins said that Johan Santana "may take six weeks to get where he wants to be" in his arm-strengthening process. SOURCE: NJ.com
Insight: Santana, 34, has been working to build up his shoulder strength this spring but it is taking him an awfully long time. He is still a few steps away from throwing off a mound.

3/16/2013 10:45:00 AM
Description: The Mets expect Johan Santana to throw a bullpen session over the weekend, according to the New York Daily News.
Insight: Santana has been working to build up his shoulder this spring and while he is progressing he isn't expected to be ready until mid-April.

3/5/2013 5:41:00 PM

3/1/2013 6:33:00 PM
Description: Mets lefty Johan Santana threw from 120 feet Friday as he continues to build up his shoulder.
Insight: Santana will progress to 150 and 180 feet before stepping back on the mound in 5-7 days, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. His status for Opening Day is in jeopardy.

2/26/2013 6:00:00 PM
Description: Mets manager Terry Collins said starter Johan Santana is "making strides" in his flat ground work, according to ESPN New York. The lefty is trying to build up his shoulder in time for the season opener.
Insight: The Mets have previously announced that Santana will start Opening Day, but you always have to worry about his health. The lefty had a 6-4 record and 2.76 ERA after June last season but went 0-5 with a 15.63 ERA in his final five starts of the season before being shut down in late August due to a back injury.

2/22/2013 4:30:00 PM
Description: Mets starter Johan Santana is having his 2013 debut pushed back until the week of March 10.
Insight: The Mets have previously announced that Santana will start Opening Day, but you always have to worry about his health and this isn't a good start. The lefty had a 6-4 record and 2.76 ERA after June last season but went 0-5 with a 15.63 ERA in his final five starts of the season before being shut down in late August due to a back injury. Like every season, fantasy owners should approach Santana with caution.

Insight: The Mets also announced that Santana will start Opening Day. The lefty had a 6-4 record and 2.76 ERA after June last season but went 0-5 with a 15.63 ERA in his final five starts of the season before being shut down in late August due to a back injury. Like last season, fantasy owners should approach Santana with caution.

8/22/2012 4:49:00 PM
Description: The Mets have decided to shut down starter Johan Santana for the season due to lower back inflammation, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.
Insight: Santana was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. An MRI revealed no structural damage but the team is well out of the race and doesn't need to risk Santana's health. The lefty lost his last five starts and saw his ERA increase from 2.76 to 4.85 in that span.

Cold8/21/2012 6:33:00 PM
Description: The Mets have not yet decided whether starter Johan Santana will be shut down for the season but they have ruled him out for his scheduled start Thursday, according to Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com.
Insight: It seems unlikely that Santana will be able to make a positive contribution to fantasy teams again this season.

Cold8/19/2012 12:43:00 PM
Description: The Mets will determine Johan Santana's fate for the rest of the season Monday.
Insight: Santana may be shut down Monday now that the team has fallen out of the race. The left-hander has allowed 33 runs over his last five starts and his ERA has skyrocketed from 2.76 to 4.85 in that span.

Cold8/11/2012 10:29:00 PM

Insight: Santana was supposed to throw 90 pitches on Saturday but he got the hook after just 43. He's now 0-4 with a brutal 22.09 ERA over his last four starts.
