National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at San Diego

(Wednesday, June 26th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 7, San Diego 5 (13 innings)

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies outlasted the San Diego Padres, 7-5, thanks to a double error from Padres second baseman Logan Forsythe in the top of the 13th inning.

The Padres sent Tommy Layne (0-2) to the mound in the 13th. Chase Utley was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Layne retired the next two batters before walking Domonic Brown. Ben Revere followed with a grounder to Forsythe, who failed to field the ball cleanly. Forsythe's throw to the plate was off the mark as the second run crossed the plate on the play.

Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon, who had blown each of his previous three save opportunities, capped a solid performance from the Philadelphia bullpen by tossing a scoreless 13th. It was the 15th save of the season for Papelbon.

Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels allowed five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits while striking out five over six innings. Joe Savery (1-0) pitched a scoreless 12th to pick up the win.

Delmon Young hit a two-run homer for the Phillies, who took the final two games of this three-game series. Kevin Frandsen, Carlos Ruiz and Michael Young added an RBI apiece.

Chris Denorfia hit a two-run homer for the Padres, who have lost four of five. Forsythe and Kyle Blanks each knocked in a run.

San Diego starter Robbie Erlin, who was recalled from Triple-A Tucson prior to Wednesday's game, gave up three runs -- two earned -- on four hits while striking out seven over 6 1/3 frames.

The Phillies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Utley hit a one-out single to left-center field and scored on Michael Young's double to left- center field.

Philadelphia tacked on another run in the second. Delmon Young doubled to left, moved to third when John Mayberry flied out and scored on Ruiz's sacrifice fly.

Hamels, who retired six of the first seven batters he faced, gave up two runs in the third. Pedro Ciriaco reached base on a bunt single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and raced home on Forsythe's double to left. Denorfia followed with a single to right that deflected off Delmon Young's knee. The ball went into center field and Forsythe scored on the play.

Denorfia's homer in the fifth made it 4-2 San Diego. Forsythe hit a two-out double and scored on Denorfia's blast to left.

The Padres tacked on another run in the sixth. Chase Headley led off with a double to left and raced home on Blanks' double to left-center field.

Blanks, however, made a costly mistake with his glove in the seventh. Pinch- hitter Frandsen stepped to the plate with men on first and second and two outs. Frandsen was given new life after Blanks' foul pop error, and he made the Padres pay with an RBI single to right.

The Phillies tied the game in the eighth on Delmon Young's two-run homer. With two outs, Brown doubled to right. Luke Gregerson came in from the bullpen to face Delmon Young, who cleared the wall in left.

J.C. Ramirez, Phillippe Aumont, Jake Diekman, Savery and Papelbon combined to pitch seven scoreless innings of relief.

Game Notes

Hamels got a no-decision to avoid a career-high 12th setback. No Phillies pitcher has ever lost 12 games before the month of July ... San Diego optioned pitcher Brad Brach to Tucson to make room on the roster for Erlin ... The Padres used nine pitchers.
