National League Game Summary - Miami at New York

(Friday, July 11)

Final Score: New York 7, Miami 1

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Zack Wheeler continued his stellar pitching against the Miami Marlins, helping his New York Mets to a 7-1 win in the opener of a three-game series at Citi Field.

Wheeler (5-8), who entered the game with a 0.96 ERA in four career starts against Miami, allowed just one run on five hits with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.

In his last outing against the Marlins on June 19, Wheeler hurled his first career complete game, limiting his opposition to three hits in a 1-0 win.

"Zack showed you tonight that his stuff is good enough that he can throw it for strikes and get away with it," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He made pitches tonight when he had to make them."

David Wright went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored for New York, which has won five of its last six.

Lucas Duda also homered and Juan Lagares added three hits with an RBI in the win.

Miami starter Hector Alvarez (6-4) has also had success against his NL East rival, however, that wasn't the case in this matchup. Alvarez was charged with six runs on eight hits over five innings of work.

The right-hander went 4-0 with a 1.01 ERA over his last five starts against New York prior to getting lit up on Friday.

Miami, which won the last 10 games Alvarez appeared on the hill, has lost three of its last four overall.

"None of my pitches were working like they've always worked," Alvarez stated. "I was also leaving pitches up in the zone."

Lagares doubled to right with two outs in the second before Ruben Tejada knocked him in with a single to center. Wheeler then slapped an opposite-field double to left to help his own cause and give the Mets a 2-0 lead.

Wright singled with one away in the third and Duda cranked his 14th homer of the season in the next at-bat to increase the margin to 4-0.

A pair of defensive gems kept the Marlins off the board in the fourth.

With one out and a runner on first, Casey McGehee laced a double into the left-field corner. Kirk Nieuwenhuis quickly got to the ball, sliding feet first to cut it off from hitting the wall, and fired a seed to Tejada, who whipped the relay throw to Travis d'Arnaud in time to get Donovan Solano at the plate.

McGehee advanced to third on the play and Garrett Jones followed with a perfect bunt down the third-base line. Wheeler hustled off the mound and just got Jones on a bang-bang play at first to end the frame.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia walked and Adeiny Hechavarria singled to put two on with one out in the fifth. Alvarez struck out on a foul bunt trying to move the two over, but Christian Yelich picked his pitcher up with a single to left that plated Saltalamacchia.

The run snapped Wheeler's streak of 20 scoreless innings against the Marlins.

After a groundout from Curtis Granderson in the fifth, Daniel Murphy singled to center and Wright drove him in with his eighth homer of the season to stake the Mets to a 6-1 cushion.

The Mets added some more insurance in the sixth as Nieuwenhuis led off the inning with a triple to center and scored on Tejada's single a batter later.

Wheeler exited the game after 114 pitches and let his bullpen do the rest. Josh Edgin picked up the final out in the seventh and the first of the eighth, then Vic Black worked around a two-out single from Giancarlo Stanton to set up Jeurys Familia's scoreless ninth.

Game Notes

Miami's 10 straight wins in Alvarez's starts is a team record ... Alvarez entered the game with 18 1/3 scoreless innings against the Mets ... The Marlins went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position ... New York finished 2- for-4 with RISP ... New York's Daisuke Matsuzaka will oppose Tom Koehler in the middle game on Saturday.
