National League Preview from The Sports Network

Saturday, August 31st (All times Eastern)

San Francisco Giants (60-74) at Arizona Diamondbacks (68-65), 8:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Francisco - Ryan Vogelsong (3-4, 5.58) Arizona - Trevor Cahill (5-10, 4.39)

(Sports Network) - Ryan Vogelsong tries to continue his excellent stretch since returning from injury as he takes the mound on Saturday night for the San Francisco Giants in the middle contest of a three-game set versus the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Vogelsong was just 2-4 with a 7.19 earned run average through nine outings after exiting a May 20 start versus Washington with a broken right hand as he was hit by a pitch. However, he has gone 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA in four starts since his return and picked up a victory versus Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The right-hander logged a season-high eight innings, scattering two hits and a walk while striking out five over the scoreless outing. Vogelsong lowered his ERA on the season to 5.58.

"What a terrific job. That's one of the best-pitched games we've had this year," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He really commanded all of his pitches, had them all working, hitting his spots. It was fun to watch."

The 36-year-old vet gave up four runs over seven innings of a no-decision on April 22 when he last faced Arizona and is 2-3 against them lifetime with a 4.22 ERA in 14 games (8 starts).

Taking the mound for the Diamondbacks is Trevor Cahill, who had his last start pushed back due to an emergency relief appearance in an 18-inning victory on Aug. 24.

Cahill went on the disabled list in late June with a right hip injury, returning to action on Aug. 17. He gave up four runs over five innings, but still won a 15-5 decision.

The righty then yielded a run over seven innings of a no-decision at Cincinnati on Aug. 22, then pitched the final four frames of the extra-inning win over Philadelphia two days later. He gave up two hits and a pair of walks while throwing 53 pitches.

Cahill is 5-10 with a 4.39 ERA in 20 games this year and will face the Giants for the third time in 2013. The 25-year-old is 4-3 with a 3.61 ERA in nine previous encounters.

The Diamondbacks failed to gain ground in their chase for the league's second wild card spot, losing a 1-0 decision to the Giants on Friday night. Randall Delgado took the tough-luck loss, giving up a run over seven innings but was outdueled by the Giants' Tim Lincecum.

Arizona has lost two straight and six of its last nine, leaving it six games behind the Cincinnati Reds in the playoff race.

"After that first inning I felt pretty good out there," said Delgado. "He (Lincecum) pitched a fantastic game tonight and really had some good control with his pitches."

Delgado's lone mistake came when he gave up a double in the first inning to Angel Pagan, who returned to San Francisco's lineup after missing the previous 84 games with a left hamstring injury. Pagan moved to third on a sac bunt and came home on Brandon Belt's sacrifice fly.

Lincecum took care of the rest, scattering six hits over six innings to help the Giants win for the fourth time in six games.

"He kept his poise when he got in a tough jam there and made some nice pitches," Bochy said of Lincecum.

The Giants have won nine of 13 versus the Diamondbacks this season, going 6-1 in Arizona.
